Subject: pre-Ironman Training training...
So I'm all signed up for IMNYC one year from today...  This year has been a bit of a wash due to injury, crashing and then just not being able to get back in the swing of things...

I know it's to early to start /real/ IronMan training, but is there anything I should be doing to get ready for real training?

I have a sprint and an Oly tri coming up and at least 1/2 marathon, to hopefully get me out of the funk and back into some consistent training...

I'm thinking my "off season" will be most of Dec then into training sometime in January...  Ideally what shape would I go into training?  Should I try and get some solid training in for my races this year and go into my "off season" in good shape and hopefully get mentally rested and prepared for next year, or does it that matter that much and it is OK if I predictably goof off, and train just enough to cover my races...

Also random advice is appreciated...  :-)

I'm just finishing a 36week IM Training Plan for IMC.  I started on the plan in mid-December 2010 - the most surprising thing was how 'easy' the first few weeks felt. But then things changed - it wasn't the intensity, or durations that I struggled with, it was the 6 days of work-outs in a row that made me painfully sore.

My recommendations are:

1. Get used to training daily so it won't be such a shok to the system.

2. Start building the aerobic base - long, slow runs and bikes will be part of your regimen.

3. Take a two to four weeks off just before the taining plan starts. I have been feeling pretty burned out the past few weeks.

Also consider doing a focus block where you work on your weakness.  I did a lot of running last year and improved from bad to moderately slow

It's also less stressful than the Ironman ramp-up since you'll have more free time when you're not working on all three sports.

LOL ... I could have written your post myself ... "predictably goof off"

So, how's your swim?

You could build up a whoppin' general aerobic base in swimming (plus work on your limiter) without taxing your body a lot or getting burnt out on the parts you are really going to have to focus on come IM training.
