Subject: RE: Why Do I Never Enjoy Running?

My wife has always been a runner, and I used to kid her that running is what you do for a real sport; it’s not a sport in itself.  I swore I’d never run just to run as it seemed silly to me to go out and run.  But once I bit the bullet and started running regularly, I really started to love it.

Now I love to just go out and listen to tunes and have my own alone time - no moderating sibling rivalries, no prioritizing honey-do lists, no stressing about work issue, nothing but my own alone time.  And just relaxing on the pace and running how I feel like running has really helped me enjoy it.

Like some others on here, I even like running on the treadmill.  Now I wish I could say the same about pool swimming – I just hate that to death, though I love OWS swimming.  I guess we all have our issues…

Interestingly enough, myself and another coach for our tri team were talking today about people who run at too high of a HR. They run at too high of a HR, they are use to being at that intensity... and they are also plagued by pain, and eventually injuries. So, I guess my question would be this: Have you tested for your HR zones... and have you built a base running in zone 2?

While I haven't always LOVED running... I have had some agreeable times with it, where it made me feel really awesome. I had a good year of running where I PR'ed the heck out of my races. Then I got injured and now for the past year running has been a painful chore. Of course, the last 3 months haven't been too bad, and I have done 90% zone 2 running in 100+ degree heat. And I injury free. Might be something to this zone 2 stuff.

Yep, see this quite a bit.  Some have become used to the higher effort and others try to justify going at a higher effort because they feel so slow otherwise.  If the zone puts you at an 11+ min/mile, then you run at 11+min/mile.  Keep running frequently and it'll get better.  Another poster brought up the possible lack of frequency (and mileage) and it is so true.  Can't run faster and expect it to get easier.  Run easier and expect to get faster.

I am very poor at all three sports. I enjoy running when I'm lighter. I like swimming. Biking scares the pants off of me. Terrified. But I do it, because I love the feeling I get when I finish the race.
