Subject: Hospital gift for a fallen training partner?
Just learned one of my training partners is in the hospital with a (in his words) destroyed femur after getting hit by a car riding to a crit.  Want to send something to him, but flowers don't seem appropriate, or a plant....  any ideas?

Book? Maybe something about accident prevention, defensive driving?

Absolutely agree on books. A suggestion is "The Long Walk" by Slavomir Rawicz. It is a riveting story of survival and redemption against the odds. The parallels coming back from an athletic injury are there, and it lends perspective. Also, it is simply an incredible adventure story. Riveting.

Fight the boredom.

Cards? Hand held video poker? Resistance bands so he can do some arm work?

I really enjoyed Chris McCormack's I'm Here to WIN, as did many others on BT.

Without knowing your training bud, a good book is appreciated by most.  Although LA is a somewhat polarizing figure, I enjoyed "It's Not About the Bike".

Agree with the book ideas...but also make sure he has a RoadID (if not, a gift card to RoadID.com would be nice). Hope he recovers quickly!

DVD. TDF DVD. or any Grand Tour DVD

is he a football or soccer fan? I enjoy past World or Euro Cup dvds.

Good comedy maybe. Or whatever movie he likes

make sure the hospital has DVD player in his room, but if it's not - it will last longer than flowers for sure.

A really good dinner (provided he is allowed to eat whatever) !

(disclaimer: I actually really liked the hopital food when I had my c-section, but YMMV!)

I'd go with books - either training related - such as ones on how to come back from the accident  - or novels or both and maybe some activity style ones - eg crosswords, wordfinds, etc. It may be an idea to call him too and see what he wants you to bring.

My BFF was in hospital recently for a gallbladder removal and I told her I was going to bring in some soduko books - which she generally enjoys - and she asked for coloring books. So sometimes the fact you are in hospital changes what you want - either because of the energy or the "I don't really want to think" - "I just want to lose myself" factors.

Time. He is probably bored to death and could use a little conversation or a card game.

A t-shirt that says HTFU.  Levity does wonders.

Books are good, but also ask him before you go if he has any food cravings or wants a coffee from Starbucks or something.  Being stuck in the hospital can definitely get old and even a friend bearing coffee can be fabulous.  And I know that one of my friends who was in the hospital long term was really craving good fresh fruit because the hospital just didn't have it.

Good friend was in the icu for a few weeks. He wanted a king size strawberry banana smoothie. Hospital food looked rough.

+1 I was hit by a car years ago and was in the hospital for a few days. Its mind numbingly boring. I am a reader and can sit on a computer for a while but even that gets old really quick.
