I use my own chip strap because I expect the recycled ones to be nasty. I also bring my own wet wipes to the port-a-potty and small bottle of hand sanitizer. Oh, and I wash fruit/veggies and wash my hands before eating. It's called basic sanitation.

ETA: Now, when we go backpacking/camping, it's all good.

vagus - 2011-08-13 1:16 AM I would have just peed on it to mark it as mine.

post of the year!!!

I got my own because of comfort - and then received another as a gift. got the first at a race expo - totally worth it.

LOL great thread!

All kidding aside, if you have your own timing chip strap, do you cross the finish line and tell the person collecting the urine-infested straps that you'll be right back with theirs? Assuming you kept it and put it with your "stuff" somewhere...

as I am trying not to puke on their heads, I just say the strap is mine as they take the chip off.  Have basically just tossed the urine soaked straps unless I open my packet at packet pick up in which case I hand it back to them then

I had my own strap at my first race because I thought I had to buy one, they took it off me after the finish and I totally forgot until later that it was mine. I have an ankle Road ID but I'm afraid they would take it and I'd never see it again so I use the ones they provide, other than being moist I've never had an issue.

I will say my daughter has done a few Kiwanis kids tri's this year and those straps are AWESOME! They are wide, the fabric is really thin and the velcro is great. She loves them because she says they are comfy.

I get them as swag quite often. I've got three or four of my own and have never bought one.

I've had religious experiences in porta pottys, like thank God I made it in time!!!

about 500 yds into my first ever olympic tri, I began to feel the provided chip strap loosen and flap on my ankle (I have skinny ankles).  stopped swimming, rolled on my back with leg out of the water and found the velcro strap ripping off the neoprene...it was hanging by a thread.  had to TIE it on to my leg while floating there.  Came off with the wetsuit after the swim and had to tie it onto my wrist for the bike and run.  (I know...should have inspected it more closely upon receiving it....but didn't think about it)

Bought my own the next day...used my own ever since.

what do you guys think of this strap? i have a feeling the provided strap will be a very cheap strap.

it says it fits most champion sizes. what does this mean? i am doing a YMCA olympic triathlon and investing in one of these soft rubber ones might be a good investment? should i get it? i get my packet the day before the race so it doesnt leave much time to get one.

I recently learned about using a safety pin to secure the chip strap, mainly for the cheap/used ones they provide you at the events.

I also like the idea of using your ankle Road-ID... Unfortunately I bought the wrist version two years ago (which I'm happy with) , but I bet having the timing chip on my wrist would annoy me.

It looks like every other chip strap out there like that... neoprene band with a velcro strap and section for the chip.  With that in mind don't knock yourself out comparing chip straps.

I have three straps, one I bought and two I got in swag bags... keep two in my tri bag.  Like that its my own and I don't have to use those hospital bands provided in some races.  Had nasty little cuts from those across my Achilles.
