Overcast
Total Time = 3h 01m 6s
Overall Rank = 171/194
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 31/33
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4, had a large breakfast and set of at 5 for the hour drive to the site. Registration was between 6-7:30 for all regardless of which wave they were in. On getting to the site I discovered I was in the last wave which set out at 9, so just chilled out until about 8:30 when I head off to the start line.
Event warmup:

Bit of a swim in the lake a mintue or so before the start.
Swim
  • 35m 19s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 21s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt like I had paced myself quite well as I was aiming for 35mins and pretty much hit it (time is a slight estimate as the official results combine the swim and t1 times).
The only down side is that I was swimming all over the place! Not long into the swim my goggles misted up which added to my shortsightedness meant I could barely see the bouys. I ended up having the marshalls telling me where the next bouy was and setting me straight when I would veer off course
What would you do differently?:

Try and swim straighter and/or fast enough to keep up with the pack so I can follow them!
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

Left calf cramped up whilst trying to take wetsuit off and I had forgotten to adjust the race belt I bought that morning to fit me! Lost a bit of time sorting that out.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure if I buy something new, it is correctly adjusted beforehand and do as much as possible whilst getting the wetsuit off (like put on race belt and helmet)
Bike
  • 1h 21m 41s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Tried to keep my pacing a bit below all out to save the legs for the run and I felt I managed that quite well. Was aiming for about 1hr27, but ended up setting a pb with ~1:21 (again, official results say 1:22:41 but combines the bike and t2 times)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Went about as well as my current ability level would allow without pushing too hard
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Decided not to take feet out of shoes and jump off the bike whilst still moving as dismount area was very small and I've not practiced it with the new bike. Slightly over ran my rack spot but not by much, only added about 10 secs to t2 time
What would you do differently?:

Pay a bit more attention to rack spot and practice dismounting the new bike
Run
  • 1h 00m 6s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Heart rate shot up within half a km so I tried slowing down to bring it back down. Ended up having to walk for a bit to get my hr settled. Had to walk for a minute just after the 2nd km and stretch as my shins decided to play up. The rest of the run was fine but I knew by the 8th km that my goal of under 3hrs was never going to happen.
What would you do differently?:

Do more bricks so I can practice initial pacing off the bike
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a bit and stretched out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My slow swim with rubbish navigation and the poor start to my run.

Event comments:

Considering it is a club run event, it was very well organised with plenty of volunteers.
Will definitely be doing this event again

Nice race. Good work on the bike PB. Fortunate that the winds didn't pick up. I grew up in that part of the world, and so I have "fond" memories of the brutal winds that can make up for the lack of hills in the Fens.
