Sluggo - in addition to what Di said, you may just have to wait it out.  I'm currently re-reading the Paleo Diet for Athletes and just finished reading that apparently when Joe Friel switched to Paleo - he was sluggish and had slower recovery for the first two weeks or so.  In week three, he noticed he was both feeling better and recovering faster.  You may just be in the initial slump period.

Bananas are Paleo, right?  Here's a recipe that I was astounded was as good as it was... and SO EASY:

One-ingredient ice cream

Just discovered it, but I can see this going a long way in beating my sweet tooth into submission...

I am going to have to try that.  In fact, I have two perfect bananas on my counter right now...off to cut and freeze for tomorrow!!!!!

try it with some frozen bluberries/raspberries mixed in! :-D

I LOVE frozen fruit in the summer - bananas, grapes (if you've never done it - you HAVE to try frozen grapes!).  *almost* makes you not miss icecream

The banana 'ice cream' worked like a charm!  Great find, thanks!!

Tomorrow it will be 3 weeks paleo for me.  I feel great.  My pants fit better already (without all the bloat) and I'm way more regular which helps with long runs as I don't get caught out anymore.  I have also totally eliminated a heart burn problem I was having and that I couldn't pinpoint.

My question is this - how do you deal with 'healthy' food pushers?  People touting the benefits of soy milk, or whole grains or legumes....and suggesting that I should be eating these things.  I can easily say 'no thank you' but those that push (and feel the need to preach), do you try to educate them, or do you just nod your head and smile at them and try to change the subject?

I don't want to spend my life debating the merits of different nutritional plans, but I also hate listening to people who suggest soy milk and whole grains to deal with IBS when that's likely the exact opposite of what they should be doing....

I usually say something along the lines of "Everyones body is different. I found what works for me, and (insert name of food they are pushing) just doesn't. It does have great health benefits. I'm glad it works for you."

Kind of the same way those of us who deal with folks who say we shouldn't be eating that kind of stuff. lol.  It goes both ways.  My cousin is pretty big into Paleo and so we have a good back and forth about it.     I find that doing what ratherbeswimming mentioned works pretty good most of the time

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking.  I've actually had a lot people just assume I'm either on Atkins or that I have celiac and it's much easier to just let them assume than to explain myself.

another Paleo question...I'm not sure if the book just kinda skimmed over this or if I just missed where they went into more detail, but:

why no vinegar?  I'm surprised, but this is a real challenge for me right now!  I love greek olives, hot sauce, a little bit of vinegar w/ my oil on salads...

Most things with vinegar are calorie free, so is it really that bad if I let myself eat it?

Thanks!

'No vinegar' is a not necessarily a rule, depending on which book you read.  There is something about fermented things being bad for you, but I believe it's related to yeast.  Yeast is naturally occurring in the air though, so I'm not sure what the argument is exactly.  The more recent books (The Paleo Solution and I believe the new release of the Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain), allow it in small quantities.

The way I figure, I'm SURE our cavemen ancestors ate fermented fruit, so what's the harm?

That's what I thought - I mean, isn't fermenting one of the oldest known cooking methods? (ok, not really cooking - but "food technique" doesn't make sense...and I haven't had enough coffee today to come up with anything else)

so yay!  I will stick to my dash of hot sauce and sprinkling of olives :-D

I've let my 5% "cheat" grow too big recently (like 20-30%) - so I gotta get back on track!

So, how are the paleo athletes doing?

I'm almost to 7 weeks and I'll weigh in tomorrow, but I think I'm now down over 10 lbs without restricting my intake at all.  And most importantly, I'm feeling FANTASTIC!!

Oh, and a friend just sent me the link to this article that I found interesting about wheat elimination in some pretty hard core endurance athletes.

bleh - do you know how impossible it is to eat for 5 days on the road on Paleo?

You can only have so many McD's salad with picked out crutons, cheese, and no dressing before you say *&^!@ it and get something which is at least tasty and filling...

I've fallen so far off the wagon   IDK how vegetarians do it.  It's like they decide not to eat meat, and have no interest in it ever again.  I decide not to eat grains, and I lose my motivation 3 days later :-p

Getting back on the horse - which will be practically impossible again on my weekend cruise :-p

Actually, I do.  Of the six weeks that I've been paleo - 3 of them have had me on the road!  I've gotten really good with getting creative - and I squeal like a little girl when I check into my hotel room and see a mini fridge!  LOL!  I will admit to eating entirely too many nuts and too many Lara bars during my travels, but I figure that's better than wonder bread.

I did have a serious advantage because my first two weeks paleo were at home - by then, I'd gotten hooked on how I felt on it, so it was a lot easier to commit to sticking it out when situations got really difficult.

I'm 7 months in and not going back.  I lost the initial 20 lbs in the first two months and I've been at 135 give or take 1 lb (seriously!) for the last 4-5 months!  I'm actually starting to see the scale tip down to the low 130s with marathon training right now, but I'm not kidding when I say I'd be fine to stay right where I am.  I am lean and strong and feel great.

I have slipped here and there, but after so many months I've LONG lost most of the urges for grain or dairy.  I will, on a rare occasion, have a little (very small) frozen yogurt, which is a special, special treat, or a bite of something, but rarely does it taste as good as I thought it would.  I'd rather have fruit or a Larabar (also a treat because they are SO expensive here!).

It is a little harder to travel BUT with a little planning you can pack a small cooler with Paleo food to take along, even when flying!  DON'T be afraid of asking for what you want in a restaurant (and, really, stay away from fast food of any kind - none of it is good).  I've found many to be very accommodating, but pick the easy dishes to make changes to (like a Cobb salad with no cheese) as opposed to asking for 3-4 special changes for one dish.  Rarely do I eat out and can't find something that works for me.  And I usually check the menus beforehand and make my decisions based on that.

If you are on a road trip, it's a little easier, because you can take whatever you need.  Choose a hotel with a mini fridge and microwave in the room (or ask the front desk if they have a microwave you can use - sometimes they will bring you one!).  Or bring a cooler into your hotel room and replenish with ice from the ice machines (I've done that!).  Fill with cooked chicken/meat, hard boiled eggs, cooked or raw veggies, fruit and snacks.
