Swim
Comments: The swim course was obviously short, as evidenced by my swim time. Still I was happy with the swim. It was a bit of a blender at the outset, but as things spread out I got in to a good flow. Happy with the swim. What would you do differently?: Not much - It would have been nice if the course was the advertised distance though. Transition 1
Comments: I took my time because I wanted to make sure I had everything I was going to need on the bike. Transition was a little slow, but OK. What would you do differently?: Speed it up a little. Bike
Comments: I was happy with this ride, but the wind really hut me. I could have had a much better bike time but for the head/cross-winds that seemed to haunt me from mile 15 on. Also the rough roads on a large part of the course really seemed to slow me down. I stuck with my nutrition/hydration plan, and took in gels and power bars every half hour. I drank two large bottles of gatorade and one bottle of water in small increments. Worked ok except that I HAD to stop for a bathroom break at around mile 30. What would you do differently?: Not much - I think I performed well given my abilities and training. Can't control the wind, just have to deal with it. Transition 2
Comments: This went fine. I packed a peanut butter sandwich to eat in T2, but my stomach objected. I took a few bites and got out on the course. What would you do differently?: Again, a little quicker Run
Comments: Man what a run - I had heard this run course was hilly, but this was ridiculous. I headed out of T2, and ran up a series of what turned out to be short hills before the "hell hill." I started walking up the hills about halfway through hell hill though, and wound up walking the significant hills throughout the course. I had no choice if I wanted to finish. I brought a bottle of gatorade on the run, which I refilled at the begining of the second run loop. I took in a few gels on the run, but my stomach started to cramp up on me about 1/3 of the way in. Mostly I was just drinking gatorade and water as my stomach allowed. Around mile 9 I started to get really emotional about the whole experience. I was thinking about the amount of work it took to get me to that point, and how I knew I was going to finish even if I had to crawl. It was a really great feeling. What would you do differently?: Pick a course with less hills. Post race
Warm down: Sat on my ass and talked with my wife. What limited your ability to perform faster: Wind on the bike Hills and stomach cramps on the run Last updated: 2005-09-12 12:00 AM

Up at 3:30 - coffee, water, granola and banana on the road. Got to the race site about an hour ahead of time. Thought I had plenty of time, but there was a fairly long, slow moving line for packet pickup. As a result, I wound up spending most of my warm up time setting up transition and getting marked. They could have used more people helping out.
Stretched and got in a very short swim.
