Subject: Newbie Swim Question

Hello,

How many people stop and stread water or float on your back while you are swimming over 500m in open water?

The only OW swim I have done long distances was in the military, and we did not stop for anything.

I just need one to two 30 sec breaks floating on my back but still kicking in a 1500m distance.

Thanks for the help,

Brian

Hey Brian, welcome to BT

The answer is: lots. Not lots as in half or even a third, but still a significant percentage. For sure you won't be the only one!

If you're going to do that in a race, make sure you start at the back and off to the side so you don't impede other swimmers.

I agree.  I have had to stop and fix goggles.  Just make sure that you are off to the side.  I am one that will run you over without a second thought.

Thanks guys,

But you better pack a lunch if you are going to run over 6'3" and 280 lbs.

dont take it personally, but if you're in OW and not standing on the bottom, 'running over' someone regardless of their size, isn't too hard... there are a number of tricks I've learned over the years (especially as kid messing around in swim practices with other kids!)

I agree. My first tri, I took off like a bat outta hell and found the water to be very shallow. Everyone dove to swim and I found myself passing the first bouy in second place still running. I was looking around wondering if this was okay, but kept running though the water. Finally I couldn't touch so I dove to start swimming and found myself belly to the bottom with my goggles over my ears. I also found that running through the water was exhausting and could barely swim after getting back to the surface. It was my own fault, I learned a valuable lesson. 6'5 280 pounds sinks pretty fast with a lot of skinny guys pushing down.
