Pre-race routine:

Registered (didn't register until day of race b/c at USAT Nationals in VT for wife's race and unsure if we would make it back in time for me to race), set up transition, relax.
Swim
  • 29m 48s
  • 1584 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a bad swim overall for me. Was able to settle in nicely and focus on maintaining a smooth stroke. Stayed away from the masses which helped me relax but prohibited me from drafting. Not thrilled with swim time but it is reflective of the amount of swim training I have done so far this yr.

Comments:

After seeing swim time, I new I had to hammer the bike as much as I could. A little bit of hurt the entire time, and a lot of hurt during some of the more difficult sections but it paid off. Very pleased with the result as I ended up passing almost everybody, save 5 men and the lead woman.

Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

Wife raced day before in VT and it had been long weekend for our 2 girls, so we decided they would all stay home while I raced. Unexpectedly saw my wife and 2 girls cheering for me outside T2 which gave me a huge lift.

Comments:

Prior to seeing my wife and 2 girls at T2, I was content with my position in the race. Once I saw them I decided to try and do something special and run as hard as I possibly could. It was a hard run, but it paid off and I was able to pass all but the race winner. For first time in my race career, I had a bike escort for last 2 miles. Amazing!

Best part of race was seeing my wife and 2 girls in finishing shoot. They were volunteering and handing out water and medals.

Congrats!

2nd OA and 1st AG...impressive...nice surprise of your wife and kids to show up and give you that extra push.

I did the AB, can't imagine being that fast on the bike course....loved the downhills and route 44.

Thanks Kathy.  Wife and girls were definitely a difference maker.

Route 44 was great...long downhills and uphills were relatively gradual.  Ending hills were punishing.

How did AB go for you?

It was fun and glad I was able to compete. Bad knee made long T1 time walking up from beach and has messed up training for much of the year.
