Subject: GI issues with Gatorade?
Today I went on a hilly bike ride (12) miles. I usually just take water with me but today I wanted to see how I reacted to a little gatorade mixed in. I did 3/4 bottle (20oz approx) with ice water and 1/4 gatorade. As I was sipping throughout the bike ride, I noticed that my stomach started hurting and I was having some GI issues. When I got home, I felt sick and didnt want to eat dinner. I guess its a good thing I tested this on a training day rather than a race day but I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem with gatorade?

Actually Gatorade works for me but it may not for you. But I would not make a final decision on one ride especially if it was very diluted. I would try it again and if the same thing happens try another product. When you say " stomach issues" do you mean left upper quadrant pain near the actual stomach, nausea or is it lower pain closer to the lower abdomen with diarrhea .... Sorry but trying to get a better understandingGood luck

I'm surprised you had issues with it being that diluted. I would reserve judgment until you try a few more times. However, we all tolerate things differently.

I can't tolerate Gatorade at all, doesn't sit with me even well diluted.  I've tried some other brands of sports drinks but the gut rot continued so I make up my own drinks with just salt and sugar and a little lemon/lime juice.  The nutritional cafe forum is good to search for recipes.

Took me two months to figure out that the sports drinks were causing my gi issues when I went through this.  For some unknown reason, the dyes affect me adversely during training and racing.  Therefore, I forego foods/drinks with dyes for about 12 hours before working out, and about 2 hours afterward.  Which pretty much means all the time during the racing season.

Some useful replacements for me include: nuun, any of the clear sports drinks, hammer products (typically dye free and free of anything that causes others' gi issues like gluten), and one specific flavor of gu that doesn't appear to have any dye.

I hope my experience helps.

Like every other metabolic process, you have to train your digestive system to function well under stress. It doesn't happen in one ride- or one season. It takes a couple years to adapt to being able to absorb calories effectively from different sources during exercise- and environmental factors influence absorption rates as well. That's another reason it takes time to adapt.

Give it a year. Keep at it. Experiment and don't give up. You're going to have bad stomach days. I remember a photo of Greg LeMond from the Tour de France, suffering on the bike, diarrhea streaming down his legs from under his shorts. After the stage Le Mond simply sponged off and said, "I had a bad stomach day."

Once you get acclimated you can take a wide range of things at an aid station and not suffer problems. It's like anything else in our sport: no quick fixes. Eventually we adapt with consistency and persistence. Nothing comes easy.
