Sorry. Couldn't attach my pics and can't bother making them smaller.

Anyway, steps down from the seawall are gone. Lockers on top of the seawall are gone (along with a nice chunk of erroded soil). Seawall railing looks like twisted coat hangers. And the debris on the beach may require some heavy equipment.

I've been going to Owenego since I was a kid. Hurricane Gloria was worse (she destroyed the seawall), but not by much.

Sent through Active.com:

Greetings Hammerheads:

Sunday, September 18th will mark the 15th annual installment of the Hammerfest Triathlon and we are looking forward to another great race. Though the Owenego’s beach and seawall took a battering from Irene, we are happy to report that owners John and Pat Bloomquist, and their entire staff, have worked tirelessly to get the “O” up and running and ready for “Hammertime” on the 18th. We are forever grateful for all of their hard work and long-time dedication to our race and all of the athletes.

To mark the 15th installment of the race, in addition to racing at one of the most beautiful venues and being treated to the annual barbecue hosted by the Owenego Club, all registered athletes will receive a hooded “Hammerfest” cotton sweatshirt. The triathlon will start promptly at 7:30 am, with a kids’ 1 mile fun run following the end of the race – usually at 10:30am.

We want to thank you for your continued support and if you haven't already urge you to register for this year’s race on-line through active.com (http://www.active.com/triathlon/branford-ct/hammerfest-triathlon-start-time-730-am-2011?int=29-12) since race day registration may not be available. The deadline for registering on-line is September 15th at 11:59pm. This year we will also be offering a 'newbie' swim wave (the last wave). Please email [email protected] if you'd like to be assigned to this wave.

We all look forward to seeing you on the 18th!

From your email sounds like everything is being taken care of. Haven't competed in Hammerfest (haven't competed in any tris actually. Never got on the bike - just ran). From what I understand, the race goes up and down the boat ramp and would avoid the lockers and the other end of the seawall.

My wife was there the day after Irene (Monday) and the pics didn't look so great. I found a link with some pics. Not sure when these were taken.

Hey all, I know this post is a few days old, but I'm doing the Hammerfest Sunday with a buddy of mine.  I was just down at the "O" last Sunday on the bike route.  This will be his 5th or 6th time doing this particular tri and my first.

The beach looks fine - they must have cleaned everything up already.  It's actually really pretty down there, especially going through the shoreline neighborhoods.  Should be a blast, and Sunday is calling for great weather.  Enjoy!Cool

I don't know - I hope this happens, but I received an email this morning - see below:

Dear Triathlete:

We are writing to update you on the status of this Sunday’s Hammerfest Triathlon. Since our last email, circumstances have changed and we are reviewing, in conjunction with local authorities, the swim and run portions of the race to determine if we need to make any modifications.

With regard to the swim, the East Shore Health Department has issued a ban on swimming due to high bacteria levels in Branford, a direct result of last week’s rainstorm. In addition, significant debris has washed up on and overrun the shore of the Owenego Club again, limiting beach access and raising a question as to whether or not there is more debris in the area of the swim course. We are assessing and monitoring both situations, and are awaiting the results of the next water test by the East Shore Health Department. We expect to have those results on Thursday.

As to the run course, a vital portion of the road leading to the majority of the run course has been severely damaged by hurricane Irene. While this portion of the road is passable, it has been substantially narrowed and therefore can only accommodate limited traffic – both vehicular and pedestrian. The Branford Police Department has approved use of this portion of the run course and will actively manage both vehicular and runner traffic during the race. Irene also damaged another portion of the run course and we have eliminated that section from the run, shortening the run by approximately 0.3-0.4 miles.

Concerning this year's kids' Fun Run, due to the condition of the road and so that we minimize the inconvenience to the Pawson Park residents, we regret that it will have to be cancelled.

Please be assured that nothing is more important than your safety and that of all the athletes and volunteers. We will send you an update as soon as we have updated information.

Regards,

The Hammerfest Triathlon
