Subject: Sept. 11 Triathlon in KC -- Great Cause!!! Info inside

Through a family member, I have come across a little-publicized, but great triathlon event on Sept. 11th in Kansas City.  It is at Weatherby Lake on the NW side of town.  VERY casual event, designed to have fun but also to allow people to compete as hard or as easy as they want.  This started as a small event for lake residents and grew over the last few years.  They want it to become a bigger event and are reaching out to the tri community.  Individual and Team registrations accepted.

I will be there!  Hope you can make it!  Only $30 to enter and it is for a great cause!  Details below and information/forms are attached to the bottom of this message.  I will try to figure out a way to attach the course map (but right now it is too big for the website to attach).

- Patrick

************************

Swimming/Biking/Running Friends-

Many of you have come to look forward to The Weatherby Lake Tri as a fun/casual way to end the season.  This year, we have decided to partner with an incredible organization at Weatherby Lake (Supporting Weatherby’s Adopted Troops) to help memorialize the tenth anniversary of the September 11th tragedy; as well as honor the recent passing of one of our local heroes, Staff Sgt Jeremy Katzenberger.  As part of this partnership, we are formalizing the event (a little), opening registration up beyond Weatherby Lake, and throwing a BBQ competition & picnic after the tri to fill us up after a tough race!

Attached is a course map, as well as some general information about the event and how to sign up.  Notice, there is a short course (only shorter swim), long course, and team event which will compete on the long course.  We are looking for over 50 participants, so please pass this info along to your friends that would enjoy, and sign up soon!  The registration fee includes entry into the event and the picnic afterwards, and a commemorative t-shirt.  This will be a lot of fun for a fantastic cause, and great work-out.  Both beginner and experienced triathletes (and BBQ eaters) will enjoy the day!

A couple important details:  1) Registration and body-marking on 9/11 will begin around 8am, and the first wave will go off at 9am.  2) Please make your checks payable to “SWAT” and email/snail-mail your completed form to Sue Genske (details attached).

Please direct questions to myself or Sue Genske (816-695-2171) and stay tuned for updates and more information about the event on 9/11/11.

Looking forward to it!

Ryan

*SWAT - Supporting Weatherby's Adopted Troops is an organization in Weatherby Lake that gives support to our adopted troops that are deployed for service outside our borders.  We offer local support to the dependents left behind plus send needed items to the troops through out their deployment.  Our goal is to show the troops and their families they really are appreciated for their service.  SWAT is also a supporter of Ft. Riley's Soldier Emergency Fund.

Thanks for posting this Patrick,

I did an open water swim there earlier this year.  Lots of little rollers around there should be fun.

Thanks for the email. I could open the documents just fine.

I am seriously considering this. I'll be up in Olathe anyway for a Saturday event. Would back to back sprint tris be really crazy. At this hour, it seems perfectly rational.

I am guessing she is talking about the womens tri. Sunday will be fun. Not planning on going hard since I have other races that are more important to me in the weeks following. It would be great to meet all of you.

Yes. It's a women's only affair put on by the Olathe Medical Center. The one on Saturday is 500m swimming; 10.5 miles biking; and 3.1 miles running. Since both are short, I'm still not seeing a problem with doing both, even after sleeping on it.

Everyone keep in mind this is a very casual event --- which is what makes it so great!  You don't have to race casual -- by all means, go all-out if you want (I plan to) -- but don't expect this to be covered by ESPN.  Laughing

Does anyone know if you can sign up the morning of the event? I live in Manhattan so I'm doing the Splash N Dash Tri at Ft Riley Saturday Sept. 10. I thought it might be fun to end the summer with two in one weekend if I'm not dead from the hills the day before!

I think so.  The individual participant form has a box for paper form that says to bring it to the event.  However, I am confirming this with the "race director" if you want to call him that.  :-)  I have also asked if you can submit the electronic form and simply not show up if you decide you can't make it.  I'll let you know.

And some additional info:

1st place trophies for 3 classes (Long, Short, Team…no gender or age designations) and ribbons (for all participants) plus 2nd place ribbons in 3 classes.  They will also make a donation of $100 from the overall winner of the Long Course to the Warrior Foundation.

The event will be timed, but no chips.  There will be volunteers responsible for timing.  You would need to rely on your own watch for splits -- or a spectator.

iPod on the run is up to the individual.

Even more info from the race director:

Wanted to update the group on a couple of fronts:

1 – In addition to the attached docs, we have posted a blog for you to visit for detailed event info:http://swattri.blogspot.com.  Feel free to pass this along to others.  Here are some answers to key FAQs…

·         Body marking and transition setup will begin day of at “C-Point” around 8am.  The first wave goes off at 9am.

·         We will plan on having the triathlon rain or shine; with the caveat that the organizers reserve the right to cancel for any unsafe conditions day of.  I will plan to communicate via email with any last minute updates.

·         The event will be timed, but there will be no chips.  Our volunteers will be responsible for timing.  I would rely on your own watch for splits.

·         Teams can mix gender and age, but can only compete on the Long Course.

·         While there is no age restrictions, each athlete will participate at their own risk.  It is important for you to gauge your comfort level with distance, speed, hydration etc as there will be no lifeguards or emergency staff on site.

·         Regarding awards, we will have 1st place trophies for all three classes (Long, Short, Team…no gender or age designations) and ribbons for all participants.  We will also make a donation of $100 from the overall winner of the Long Course to the Warrior Foundation Fund.

·         The SWAT BBQ will begin at 1pm at Birmingham Park in Weatherby Lake to fill your tanks after the tri:  http://eweatherbylakeliving.com/organizations/swat-09-11

There will be a "practice run/workout" on Monday morning for anyone interested:

Weatherby Lake Triathletes-

As mentioned, we will be doing a dry-run of the Weatherby Lake Triathlon course on Labor Day.  Those interested, meet at “The Beach” on C-Point at 8am sharp…

I've decided not to try to do this event. I really want to, but with my aching Achilles and sore hip, I think the one on Saturday is going to be enough. I procrastinated signing up for it and didn't, and now I'm glad.

It does sound like fun, and I hope it goes well.

Bump for a last call-out to possible participants!  I did a dry run Monday morning and it is a beatiful setting for a triathlon.  Should be a blast.  Met quite a few people that will be doing/putting on the event and it will be a fun group.  Good mix of casual and higher level athletes.  Going your own pace will certainly be the norm.
