Subject: What is your average strokes per 25 m?
In the past, I have focused on breathing and my form and not been able to count my strokes per 25m. Now I can count them and am completely obsessed with it. I don't know how I swam before without it! What are most of you averaging? I am usually at 20 (that is one per arm) per 25m. I've cut that from 25-27, but I am wondering where I fall comparatively speaking.

Thanks!
Happy training!
Victoria

I generally use 7-8 full strokes (per arm) per 25m. I also have very long arms, though.

I was sitting at about 25/25m until I started masters class. Now I am generally 16-17/25y. I'm slow, though.

I am at 12-14 total strokes for 25 yds, but still I feel I am not swimming that much faster than before...

I'm short (5'3") and average about 17-19 strokes per 25yds. This is about a 1:55-2minute pace.

I'm getting about 20-21 strokes in. Down sharply from 27 two months ago when I just got back into the pool. (Tried to swim like a runner ) Hope to take a class to pick it up a bit more. But everything I have seen is that it’s the stroke that counts not the time, because you really need that efficiency so you can save energy for the bike and Run.

Good post. I was wondering the same thing..

Cheers.

Rice.

I'm at 13-14 strokes right now per 25 yards. I think it's good you're paying attention to the number of strokes you're taking, because a lower count means a stronger stroke, but don't neglect cadence either. Cadence is important in swimming too. As a suggestion, try alternating one swim (50 yard?) where you're working on your stroke count, and one where you're working on a higher cadence (not thrashing, but faster than you normally turn it over). Don't worry about keeping perfect form on the cadence training, if you did it would be called "sprinting". I always felt like this was a whole new way of training for those muscles, and could always feel the benefits in my races. At the end of the day, you want to have strong, powerful strokes, but also a rapid turnover. Good luck!

I'm at about 15-16. That slips a few strokes on my really long sets.

16 per 25 meters. Once I learn to push off the wall, I expect that to go down. I'm starting masters classes next week, so I'm hoping for a big improvement!

Not sure that is the message you should take away....my coach said that you need to aim below 20, that that is reasonably efficient and not sub par....we can all get better but you are in a respectable range now....I also average 20 strokes per length...if I exaggerate I can get down to 17-18 but that's not my regular swim form....

16 per 25 yd (as in 8 per arm) at a 1:25-1:30/100 yd pace.  More if I'm swimming faster - my turnover is pretty quick when I sprint.

I think it's useful for beginning swimmers to work on stroke efficiency by decreasing the number of strokes per length, but there comes a point where there are diminishing returns.  For instance, I could get myself across the pool with 10 strokes, but it wouldn't do me any good because it would take me forever.

I am so glad this topic came up. Thanks Victoria. I was going to raise the same subject yesterday.

Yesterday, I got back in the pool after 2.5 months. During those 2.5 months, I was swimming in the lake/ocean with a wetsuit. I was noticing that I was a much faster swimmer in the pool than I was in open water with a wetsuit. Well it turns out that I am not faster in the pool anymore either. Previously, I was swimming about 1:43/100m and about 22 strokes/25m (which I was okay with because I'm short). Yesterday I was swimming 2:00/100m and I noticed that my stroke count was 30SPL. I worked and got the SPL to 26 and was swimming about 1:55/100m. I'm not really worried about time right now, but I need to get my SPL down. Does anyone know any drills for this?

Thanks,
Jen

Thanks for the advice. I was a little discouraged because I feel now if I took my stroke count down lower, I would be slower and almost floating for a while. Needless to say, of course improvement can def be made in other areas

I'm at about 20, but at a TI clinic was told that I should be able to get down to 16. I guess it all depends on how far I'm underwater after I push off at the wall.

Funny, but this is what I was working on last night.  I was at around 22 strokes in a 25 yard pool.  Last night, when I focused on my form and pulling, I got it down to 19, which is an improvement.

I'm still slow, but I'm no longer the slowest person in the pool.

I used to be in the 20-25 range, but now I have concentrated for over 2 years now and got it down to 15 consistently.  Not quick with it though, I need to work on that.

Does anyone have any drills/ideas how to put the speed with the stroke length?

Jason
