Subject: need help finding a long-lasting snack..
Looking back over my eating habits I find that working from home provides too many temptations and I try to stick with a small meal (~400 calories and no more than 800 calories for dinner) per 3 hours during the day. The problem is that after 90 minutes, I start to get hungry again and feel the need to put something in my mouth (which ends up being something not so healthy).

What I think I need to find most is a food-type that will provide a long lasting feeling of satiety and provide a wide range of nutrients so that I minimize the feeling of needing a snack.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Shaun

PB, raw almond, cashews, soynuts. High fiber cereal. Hard boiled egg. Just a few.

I can usally get through the hunger with a container of non fat yogurt and a small handful of granola-- I like Bob's Red Mill NF granola and Sonyfield Farm yogurt...

At your meals, are getting a good balance of protein, complex carbs, as well as fat? Adding more good fat to my meals helped curb my hunger between meals. Things like flaxseed in oatmeal and nuts are good sources.

my normal breakfast is Kellogg's SmartStart with a piece of fruit and then a turkey sandwich for lunch. I try and have a small snack around 10:30 if I feel I need one, and then a fruit shake (Strawberry, Dannon L&F yogurt, and soy milk) around 3 or 4, depending on my evening training schedule. I've tried cutting out a large amount of the fats like mayonaisse and I can't have nuts in the house b/c my wife has severe allergies.

One thing I think I have found is that, on the days when I train in the morning, I am more hungry during the day.

Sounds like I may be missing the healthy fats element from my diet. Does fat typically supress hunger?

At least that's the case for me. I would feel full longer if I had some fat (from meat, olive oil, or nuts) for lunch. I also find high fiber bread or cereal helps to keep me feel full. Your meal plan looks very healthy.

Snacking or grazing on smaller meals is actually better for you. Try low GI(Glycemic index) foods that realease energy slower. I'm sure if you do a GI search through google it will have tons of info and products. As for the bad foods, remember who bought them into the house in the first place. You control what you buy, so make sure you buy right to start with. I better stop I'm sounding like Dr Phil or worse my mother.

What about a supplement shake with low amounts of simple sugars? A lot of the supplements have simple sugars for taste and short term energy, but they do little in the long term for hunger.

Is edamame (boiled soybeans with salt) an option?  Is your wife allergic to soy beans?  I get the bag of edamame from Trader Joe's, but I've also seen it at Costco, and Safeway.  They're sooo yummy and filling, high is fiber and protein, and very low in fat.  I can make up a bunch and take them along with me in a plastic bowl or bag to snack on in the afternoon.

I also cut up an apple (I'm more like to eat it that way) and take that for an afternoon snack as well.

Or a small bowl (coffee cup size) of my favorite cereal and milk hits the spot too.

I love edamame. I have a bag of frozen edamame sitting in the freezer, but I am horrible at cooking them. I always make them dry and slimy.

The edamame I got from Costco is pre-cooked and frozen. So all I did was put 1.5 cup of them in a smaller ziploc bag, throw the baggie in the fridge to thaw overnight. Bring the baggie to work the next day and munch on them all day long. I even eat the pod too! Well, sometimes.

Oh my, thanks for the edamame pointers. I only had a few questions about them before, and most of them seem to have been covered now:

1. what the hell is it?
2. how do you spell it?
3. how do you cook it?
4. how do you eat it?

Other than that, I'm good.

Heh.  I love edamame.

1. it's soy beans
2. e-d-a-m-a-m-e
3. boil in lots of water with salt for about 5-7 minutes
4. well, if it's in the pod: shake lots of salt on it, stick it in your mouth and use your teeth to pull out the beans.  If it's out of the pod: shake lots of salt on it, and eat.

yum-yummity-yum-yum!

From what I can see, you're not getting enough protein. I can have one egg and piece of toast with a small glass of nf milk and I am good until lunch. I will also do a hard boiled egg, plus two hard boiled egg whites. I do force myself to have a small snack, like yogurt to keep my blood sugar up. I also like Clif bars. They have a good balance, and very filling. (Kinda high in cals though...so I use them on high intensity/long work out days)
Adding healthy fats is a good ides. If you predominantly eat carbs you'll burn right through that and get hungry sooner.

I find that on the mornings that I have my trusty bowl of oatmeal (made with half lite vanilla soy milk and half water) with either dried cranberries or fresh raspberries, I don't get the mid-morning munchies.  It's also my race morning breakfast and it works.  Just a thought.

For snacks, I do fresh veggies with part-skim mozzerellla, a handful of almonds, or peanut butter on an apple.  Those seem to hold me.
