Subject: Full Distance/Iron Distance Race for Fall of 2012

I'm looking to do my first full distance race next fall.  I would love to hear what races you all have done that you would recommend.  As the title suggests, it does not have to be a branded ironman, just 140.6 miles.  I don't think anything outside of North America is feasible for me right now, but otherwise I am willing to travel.

Thanks in advance

B2B and IMFL are the first to pop into my head.

I haven't done it, but will in 2013 maybe. Chesapeakeman. It's not so crowded as a WTC event. It's run by Columbia Triathlon in Maryland. Very flat bike course, but winds can make it a challenge. Later half of September. www.tricolumbia.org - Same group runs a 70.3 WTC event in June which gets some pretty big name pros, Eagleman.

I've only done Vineman, but I love the course, especially the swim and run.

If you just want to do 140.6 and don't care about the IM brand, why not try a self-supported IM?  Coach Brett (Zen Tri) fully endorses it.  Much cheaper too!

I don't want to do a self-supported because I would still like to be in a crowd, with people.  I just don't care who sponsors it.

B2B in Wilmington, NC comes to mind if you want a fast race. The start can be cold, but that point to point swim with an incoming current is hard to beat, especially if swimming is not your strong suit. The bike is flat and fast, although the run is a little hilly. T1 and T2 are not in the same spot so the logistics can be a little hairy, but I'd do it again if I ever decide to do another iron distance race.
