Anybody else doing this race?

 They offer a 50k, 25k, and 10k.

I'm looking at doing the 50 mile.  It would be my first ultra.  I couldn't find the distances you listed, but they would be nice options.

There are actually two Rocky Raccoon trail races each year, run by different RDs.  Both are run in Huntsville.  I ran the 50 miler earlier this year and will run the 100 this upcoming February.  I haven't run the one in November, but I assume they're on the same set of trails.  I really like those trails.

Yep, two of them.  The Nov 5th one is 50k and the one in Feb is 100mi/50mi.

Looks like the routes are pretty similar.  I did a 50k here a couple years ago in Dec, Texas Trail Run, but it looks like that race is not happening this year.

Great trails - got to be careful with all the exposed tree roots!

I did the 50K a few years back and really enjoyed it. I am planning on the 50miler this year in February. I'm not sure yet about the 50K as it's the week before San Antonio. If I want to run SA casually I'll do the 50K. If I want to push SA I'll be skipping it this year. It depends on how my training goes. With the current heat, it's not looking like SA will be anything to brag about for me

Bummer about the December one, I was hoping that might fit with my schedule!

FYI: I emailed them and Texas Trail Run is on this year, first weekend in December.

Thanks for the update Erin.  Might have to do both now!

Just saw you are doing San Antonio.  We have a big group going too.  Hope the legs aren't to trashed after the 50k, might have to take it casual as well.

Whats the best way to train for the 50mi?

I would like to do it but not sure if I could get into that kinda shape in time.

Run.  Then run some more. Run ALOT.

Sorry for the snarky comment but in reality that's about it I think.  I'm not sure if there are training plans for these kinds of runs or not.  I'm interested in doing some ultra trail runs myself, but everything i've read points to just running for the sheer love of running, and leave the training plans to the road runners.

There's a ton of training plans out on the internet for 50-mi, 100-k and 100-mi races. They almost all focus on back-to-back long runs on the weekend, with the emphasis being time on your feet rather than pace. If you interested in looking, I think a great place to start is:

The races at Huntsville are great places to break into these distances. The trails are fairly gentle and firgiving, and all the races are pretty well run!

haha, ya I was actually thinking the 'run, then run some more" philosophy myself. Not sure how else to do it. Good thing I love running or this might be a problem!

Thanks for the website I will check it out.

Awesome! Hopefully I'll see you out there

I'm VERY tempted to do the RR 50K, it depends on if I want to try for a PR at SA or not. Decisions, decisions!
