For those that have done the square lake Long course tri in the past:

How did they do the wave start in the past? 3, 4 waves, separated by age and/or sex?

Do they have any thing besides water at the hydration stations, both bike and/or run?

This is going to be my first tri over an olympic distance, so i have no idea what to expect.  their site does not say much, of course.  I read the forums a ton, so i am guessing it will be similar to other event at this distance.

I raced it in 2006 and volunteered on the run course last year.  I don't think there were more than a few waves, but can't be sure.

Bike aid?  Can't say.

Each run aid station had gel, powerade and water.

Neither bike or run course are flat.  Run course has no shade.

There will be wave starts for sure, by age group and gender (IIRC about gender).

There is a water bottle drop after the 1st loop of the bike course. Aid stations are every mile and like leapdog said, there is little to no shade on the run.

thanks for the info.  nutrition is going to be my biggest challenge.  Mainly because i have not raced this distance yet. My other main concern is going out too hard and crashing and burning.  I figure with this being my last race of the year; I have plenty of time to recover.

Good luck. I think that nutrition may be the most important part of a half iron distance race, so keep working on figuring it out!  It's best to have your own plan rather than rely upon the course too much.  I highly recommend a concentrated sport drink and bring along a bunch of gels or something.

in the past, they have always had a morning-of packet pickup option. I don't do races anymore that don't offer that.

Ditto on the comments above -- the reason I love this races is because of the hills on the bike and especially the run... it is a great end-of-season test.

I have heard that the bike is quite hilly, how is the run course of this race? I have heard that there is no shade. But what is the terrain like on the run?

I personally do not think the bike course is terribly hilly. I know nothing of the run.

I've only done the short (which isn't all that short) but the run is the hilliest run I do around here. Not little rollers, but longer hills that you can see coming for a while and need to adjust your stride for. In the short, there is one hill that seems to last for all of mile 2 -- I'm sure the long course does that hill as well.

I'm not saying it is "oh my god" hilly -- after all, this is the Midwest, but it has enough long, gradual hills to become a little bit of a factor in the course.

If you know the bike course, you know the run course pretty well.  The first 3 miles (and last 3) are the same as the bike course.  From Square lake, back towards manning.  Appx 3 miles, take a left towards Pine Pt Park and go out appx 3.5 miles.  Definition of hilly vs rollers is subjective, but we'll all agree it's not flat.

The run is not flat (for almost the entire course). With the exception of the first 2 miles out (these are the steepest, longest climbs) it's constantly up and down. However, they are not rollers. Think Summit Ave (false flats, basically). As leapdog said, the first 3 miles are the same as the first 3 miles of the bike course. Then you turn south on Norell (55). You go up and then it's a steady downhill for quite awhile. A couple short climbs and you turn around.  While it's only about 400ft of climbing, the run is not easy.

That's a link to my wife's run on the short course last year. FWIW, the short course run is very tough, but at least it's shaded.

I'm going to delete those links in a few days, but feel free to check them out.

The website has now listed "who is participating in the race". So if they follow their pattern, then tomorrow they will have packet pickup details on there

The packet pickup used to be the day of the event and Friday at County Cycles off of Lexington Aveunue in St. Paul, but CC is not providing race support this year. I am not sure what the deal is, I e-mailed the race director. The website was updated today, but nothing was added about pickup. If I get a response I will let you know.

Frontrunner partnered with Gear West this year, so that is where packet pick up occurs. It's too far of a drive for me, so I just stick with race day pick up. It's pretty easy actually.
