Pre-race routine:

arrived. packet pickup. body marking. set up transition. began warmup.
Event warmup:

short jog...3/4 mile?
short swim 200m?
Swim
  • 05m 26s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Fudged my estimated swim time to get a better starting position (as everyone seems to do). Started 27th. Only got passed at 200 and then by a group of 3 at 250.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...maybe catch a draft when I got passed?
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I flew! 2nd fastest T1 in the race. I sprinted from the pool to the bike and sprinted out of transition with my bike. I do nothing in T1 other than put on my helmet.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing!
Bike
  • 42m 12s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 23.46 mile/hr
Comments:

Exited transition somewhere in the 20s (place wise). By the time I was in my shoes I was probably 5 places up. By mile 3 I'd passed the guy who started #1. By mile 8 I passed the guy riding in 2nd place. The rest of the way I slowly reeled in the guy running #1. On long straights I could see the lead vehicle with the flashing lights.
I didn't push too hard, but thought it would be great to lead in to T2. With 1/2 left on the bike I was right there reading his jersey and he looked under his arm and saw me. He put the pedal down and pulled away while I got my feet out of my shoes and eased up to prepare for T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Began to turn down the wrong row and had to spend about 2 seconds looking for my bearings. Otherwise T2 was fine. Fumbled once with my left shoe, but much better than my usual T2 fumbling.
What would you do differently?:

Turn down the right row!!!
Run
  • 20m 51s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Run felt pretty good. Didn't struggle with anything but my effort.
I came out of T2 maybe 30 seconds behind 1st? Was reeling him in the whole time...especially on the downhills. In fact, that may have been the only time I was gaining.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I paced the run well.
Post race
Warm down:

walked it off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just my ability

Event comments:

Never finished on the overall podium before!

That must be an exciting feeling chasing down #1, being able to see him. I was about 2 miles behind #1 and that got me excited. Great race and congratulations on #2.

Unreal race - #1 on the bike and 6 on the run is over the top.  Sounds like you just needed a few more hills to catch him!

I owe it all to the copious amounts of ice cream I ate the day before.

If WTC would start handing out ice cream during IronMan events I might be able to turn pro!

ps.  somewhere down in the race rankings (maybe #4 on the bike?) is a guy named Dustin Greer who's a pro mtn biker and cat 2 road racer.  Plus he's in his 20s.  So more power to the old guys huh?

Oh, and I was around 6 minutes faster than last year at this race.  That's encouraging.  I wonder how much improvement I can eek out next season?

Finally had a chance to read this.  Very impressive Jeff.  Your hard work this year is paying off in a huge way.  And knocking that much time off a short race is ridiculous!  It blows my mind that you can push 23+ mph on a "really hilly" course.  That's just awesome!  Congrats.  Next time, top of podium baby!!!

On the 10th I have my last triathlon of the season.  It's more competitive than this one, but the really cool thing is that it's a nearly flat course with smooth pavement.  Last year I biked 25.x mph and barely missed their all-time records list for the bike split.  (kinda cool that they keep all-time records posted on their website)

So I'm going to bust the bike a little bit and see how fast I can really go.
