Registration for the lottery begins this THURSDAY!

I did this race in June. Do it! It's awesome swimming across the bay and trust me when I say this "...it'll be the easiest 1.5 mile swim you ever do..." The bike and run are the killer parts of this race.

By the way, my profile picture is from EFA...

Good luck Escapers!

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring. I figure that's enough time to get comfortable enough for the more technical bike-- and, being right in my own backyard it would be a shame to not at least try.

Oh yeah EFA is an event I HAVE to do!!!!    Did not get picked in lottery last year.  Going for it again this year.  If I don't get picked, I'm going to go via charity slot.   So if the charity slot is the way, generous donations will be much appreciated from y'all!

FoggyGoggles - 2011-08-30 5:45 PM What's the typical water temp? And what type of trail is the run on?

From what I hear its below 60degrees

This year I think the water was 52 or 55 but with a full wetsuit and a neoprene cap it was really a non issue. My face was cold for about 2 or 3 minutes then it goes away. My feet were a little chilly but wasn't a big deal.

Parts of the run were on a single track with two way traffic. I thought it was fun. You go over old cannon installations, up and down wooden steps and of course THE SAND LADDER. The first and last mile are perfectly flat...it was a fun hard run. Other trails are like jeep trails with lots of running room.

You're right: the swim is freezing cold and brutal. The bike and run are nearly flat and downhill all the way.

Although it's a bit tricky for me.  My wife and I both want to do it.  But what happens if we both enter the lottery and only one of us gets in?

My wife gave me the go ahead to try and get in.  According to the website, all 50 states will be represented.  Coming from Michigan, maybe nobody here will want to make the trip, thus leaving a prime spot for yours truly.

My wife and I travel to Ohau usually in the  Winter.  Move that trip to June. Stop a few days in SF, then fly off too our vacation.

Then get a second and third job to payback my sponsor: CapitalOne.

Does anybody know the approximate odds of winning an entry?

I know I had read that it's about 1/40 for Kona...but it would seem that you can't compare these two lotteries because of the variables (length, cost, location, etc).

Thanks to the OP for the heads-up!

It's my favorite race in all of triathlon... and I agree that the swim is easy if you actual listen to the instructions.  Many people don't.

I have no idea but I did the lotto twice and got in both times in the first round.  I'm pretty sure that it's a lot easier to get into than Kona!

In 2011 5 people from Austin Texas got in. I got in on my first try. There are only a few qualifying races. The majority of the 2000 athletes are lottery winners. I think the odds of getting in are pretty good.

When you get in; start running and biking hills. That's my tip of the day Smile

I'm convinced that I got my lottery spot because I was a female living in South Dakota at the time.

Reading the FAQ on the site it says between 30% and 50%.

There are 1700 slots for the lottery.

I wonder if being from Canada will help/hurt my chances

I'm going with help it! They want people from around the world. Of course they might think "...those crazy Canadians like the cold maybe this won't be a big challenge for them..."

No joke here!  And, for the bike, get used to riding up steep hills w/little momentum to help you.  A lot of the hills are after sharp turns so you don't have a lot of momentum to help you up it!

And the run is crazy... not just because of hills but all the steps, different surfaces, etc.  There are several steps that you need to run up getting over the GGB, not including the sand ladder and the ~3/4 mile of beach running prior to starting that trek.

It's a lot of fun and an epic race.  I plan to throw my hat in the lottery since my hubby said to go for it!

There *may be* sharks in The Bay but don't worry about them. They are 30 feet down and you can't see them. You can only see an arms length. It's more important to focus on the land sight points then worry about the man eating sharks in the bay lurking just below you in your black seal skin wet suit.

We have 6 of us in the lottery this year. For those of us that don't get in, we are all going to split the cost of the charity slots. We really want to do this race together!
