A friend told me about triathlon back in 2001 and we were supposed to train and race it together.  He quickly dropped out leaving me to train myself...and he was Mr. Cross Country (I had no sport accolades).  I went to the library and found 'Triathlon for Ordinary Mortals' - that got me going.

And we all thank you for taking that first step and continuing on with it, otherwise, either there would have not been a BT or BT would not be as it is today.

We all appreciate what Ron and Marmadaddy have done for this community!

The first one? , I don't remember..... The second one?, cause the first one kicked my butt so bad that and I'm not one to throw in the towel.  The third and all subsequent triathlons?, Cause now I'm hooked and it's in my blood.  Just did my first IM one week ago!

For me, it started as a dare/bet between my girlfriend and I. We go to Dewey Beach, DE for a week every summer with some friends from college and they have a Triathlon every september in town. We saw an ad for it and she said that we should do it because it looked like a fun challenge. At first, I was skeptical and didnt think I would be able to do it because I was really out of shape but I bet her that if I did it, she would have to do it also so we both signed up for a triathlon in September( in NJ because of a wedding we couldnt do the Dewey Beach Tri that year). Long story short, I started training, lost a bunch of weight and got hooked. Best bet I have ever taken

Crossed the finish line of last years RnR Phoenix Marathon, looked at my cousin who ran it with me and said "we need to do triathlons next!".  Surprisingly enough he agreed.

I played every team sport out there, loved running yet wanted something more challenging.  I guess we're all a bit masochistic

I started running to lose weight, then added in some biking for variety.  I had toyed with the idea of doing a tri, but did not actually do one until someone I know told me I would never survive one. So of course I did my first sprint this year just to prove them wrong, now I can't wait for the next one.

Used to road race (bikes) when I was young and always ran (played soccer and hockey, so running was a great way to gain endurance and speed since I had no skills to speak of). Duathlons seemed to be a natural way to get back into shape and racing again. Early on this season, my one and only duathlon that I really targeted was cancelled due to insufficient number of people signing up so I signed up for my tri and have done a few since then. Still a non-swimmer and painfully slow, but I won't drown and I can make up quite a bit of time on the bike and run.

I was just a runner, and I had hurt my knee.

The doctor I visited suggested that swimming and cycling helped "unload" the knee. So i started that routine to heal the knee

A guy at work had a finishers certificate on his wall, we got to talking about it, so I jumped into the sport.

That was 58 tris, including 9 IM and 5 1/2 IM ago.

In June of last year I found out I was to become a Grandma for the 1st time. I didn't want to be one of those overweight Grandma's that didn't have any energy and couldn't keep up. I knew I had to do something. I started walking and could barely go 1 mile! A few days later I saw a local news feature on the Topeka Tinman Triathlon and set that as my goal. When I was young I ran track and was on the swim team and rode my bike to get to practices so somehow it made sense. I kept walking and started swimming but could barley do a lap at a time. When my walking got better and I added Couch to 5k. I finally added in the bike and just kept going on all three! I lost the weight, over 35 pounds. On June 18th I completed the Topeka Tinman and have gone on to do three more this summer with one more to go! I have never felt better! My Granddaughter may be the one struggling to keep up with me!

I was not at a good place in my life (the plant I worked at for 15 years closed).  I had just changed jobs that limited access to a GYM so I started running.  I went from one mile to two and then to three and.....(you get the picture).

I saw a brochure for a Sprint Tri and thought I would try it.  I purchased a bike off of craigslist for $200.  Started doing some swimming and two months later I did my first race.  I was hooked.  The training and the race gave me a different outlook on life.  I loved the sportsmanship during the race and knew I  had to do more.

I started commuting to work sometime in April this year. (20 km one way) My goal was to be in better shape and also enjoyed the time alone riding. Someday at work, I heard from a co-worker about triathlon and some events that go on locally. I know how to swim, have a bike and ‘can’ run somehow so why not? I was always amazed by the sport and decide one day from my ride home to do a try a tri. Completed my second tri last Saturday and already looking for the next one.

I had a date with a young woman on my Masters swim team that went very badly.  I was too embarassed to back to practice figuring she would be there.  But I needed something.  Then the light went on to do triathlons.  I figured I would do the Naperville sprint tri, and the training would eat up all my time, and get my mind off of the heartbreak.  Naturally, I fell in love with running in the process, and decided to take this as far as an amateur could.

spurred by my dad's tripple bypass I started running.  when I finished my first 5k I thought--hell that's the hard part.  I can do the rest. bought a bike and went back to swimming and was competing 6 weeks later.  I guess watching the original Iron Man on wide world of sports made it's mark on me.
