I missed three close too my heart, favorite running races this year, so far. My husband's in the Air Guard and has weekend drills monthly. I make sure to be home with the kids on those weekends, so I'll miss whatever races are happening at the time.

Lifelong runner and some triathlons 20+ years ago, more steady Triathlons for the last 4 years...in all that time I only missed 2 races that I signed up for:  the first was part of a college reunion weekend and I ended up too hung over to run a 10k at 7:00 am.  The other was last June when I had appendicitis and surgery the night before a sprint Triathlon.

I have been pretty lucky.

I missed one 10-miler "race" that I signed up for way too soon and then forgot to train for...

Then I missed a 5 mile run race, due to heavy snow. I would have ran in it, but it was a 30 mile drive away and not worth ending up in a ditch for.

I am worried I may end up with my 3rd this weekend. I am signed up for a relay and now my partner is looking like a problem (injury flare-up).  Of course this happens about a day after the deadline to switch has passed.  I still put an e-mail into the RD.

I've missed about a half dozen races over the years due to injury or illness.

On one occasion I was healthy at the time of the race, but had missed too much training and didn't feel adequately prepared.

The most was this past year when I missed two sprint tri's and a half marathon after I developed Achilles tendonosis in my left heel.

Missing the Chicago half marathon this weekend due to work related stuff. This will be my first missed race but at least my work is covering the lost registration fee for me.

One, this thanksgiving while at my mom's house in PA.  Started snowing right before I headed toward the race.  Snow on the road but not too bad and it just started sticking on the road.  Passed two cars that started flashing thier lights and waving arms.  uh oh.

Very large downhill. Tapped brakes.  Didn't slow down.  Oh poo.  Got down into 4 low to slow my speed but brakes did nothing.  Looked in rear view and saw car behind me flying into the woods.   In front of me, car upside down in ditch (with runners going to the race no less).  Another car in ditch on other side.

Shot the gap and thankfully made it to the bottom of the hill in one piece.  Wish I had my heart rate monitor on.  Said screw this and went home the other way.  By the time I got home, they had closed the road in both directions (and they just don't close roads for snow in PA).

Spend the rest of thanksgiving sleigh riding with my daughter who has only seen snow a few times (we live in Charlotte) and deemed that better than any race!

I also had one almost DNS this year.  Woke up for a sprint in April and it was monsooning out at 4:30am and I had an 80 mile drive to get to the start.   Looked at the forecast and saw it was supposed to storm all day.  Went back to bed.  When I woke up, checked my email and saw they cancelled the race about 10 minutes after I was supposed to leave.  This was the day the tornado blew away the Lowes about 100 miles from the race site.   Good call on back to bed.

Just one. Beach to Battleship HIM last year. Was ready but we decided to do a different East Coast trip in the Fall. I do many races during the year and have been very fortunate to have not had any others derailed. I usually try not to signup too far in advance if I can help it.

After 30 years of running without injury...

I dropped out of a sprint and 2 Olys (plus a 10K road race) due to a knee injury.  Which occurred after 5 great months of training.  Had surgery August 1st.

3 and all this year!  missed a HIM in May due to Bronchitis, a sprint in July and HIM next weekend due to broken foot.  Would have been 4, but Hurricane Irene canceled a 1/2 marry so technically I didn't miss it.

Thankfully, I only lost my fee on the 1st HIM.  Was able to defer the others.
