ironmangranny - 2011-12-15 9:30 AM What is it like swimming in Lake Eva? Is it fresh water?  Clear? Any wild life ie alligators??  LOL.  I'll be visiting St Pete at the time and figure it's close enough to drive morning of...

Any lake in FL bigger than a few acres has at least one gator.  That being said, when 100s of people go crashing into the water any gator within a 1/4 mile of the start will be high tailing it in the other direction.

A few years back at Moss park were were waiting for the start with about 30 seconds to go.  Right in the middle of the swim course about 200 yards out a gator peeks it head up.  We all look at each other, shrug and then the gun goes off and everyone goes crashing into the water.  There was no issue at all.

Now swimming alone is a different matter.

And to tag onto the post above.  St Pete is a long drive to Haines City.

This really isnt a great spot for a HIM.  Haines City is a nice town but has no real infrastructure to handle the crowds and participants.  Your best bet for lodging is any place at US 27 and I-4 which puts you about 20 minutes away.  The roadways on the bike course are notorious for being rough and patchy, but there has been a lot of construction lately so that might have been repaired.
