triclyde74 - 2011-11-14 6:58 PM Well, now that I got into IMFL in Nov (volunteered this past race), I'm doing the Gulf Coast Tri in PCB the weekend before FL 70.3 instead.  Great chance to get first hand course experience at the same race site/hotel, swim and run course exactly (just one loop each instead of two) and a third of the bike course

Thank you for your volunteer work...you guys were the bomb!  I was/am considering this race since I know the course...a friend suggested I'd be better off elsewhere since it is the same course and to experience something different.

So it has been determined that it will be at Disney.  Wonder how Haines City got thrown into the equation.  Living there for 5 years, I can tell you there isn't much there.  It would make a good course in the various distances, but Haines City couldn't possibly handle such a high profile event.  That is good for the competitors, but I was going to actually volunteer if it was at Haines City, since there is no way I can do a 70.3 yet.

I heard at IMFL this was being move from Orlando to a small town further south in Florida.  I don't remember the name but it might be Haines City that was referenced here.

Orlando 70.3 was the first Ironman branded race I did and now have it to compare to NOLA and IMFL.  The Orlando race just does not compare.  The main issue was the run and it just sucked so bad that it hurts the entire race.

Basically you are out on a bunch of fields where you do a couple of laps.  It is more like something put together for a local triathlon than a $200+ Ironman race.

I would go back to IMFL (well if it did not fill in 16 minutes), I would go back to NOLA.  But would never go back to Orlando 70.3

The new venue that was talked about at IMFL sounds a lot better.

There was conversation last week on ST, and someone posted that it is going to Haines City and that WTC had been eyeing this site. Ft. Wilderness is going in for a remodel I guess. Lake Eva is home base they say. Probably a solid race course setting but can't imagine the crying about no hotels(high end) in the area close. Is there a hotel on Lake Eva? Risky move I would think but it might work out just fine.

No, there is no hotel at or near Lake Eva, at least not one you would want to stay at.  The closest full service hotel is the Omni Champions Gate, but Disney and all the related hotels are only 20-30 minutes away with traffic.  Lake Wales and Winter Haven have several select service brands like Holiday Inn Express, Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, Best Western.  If they do hold it there, maybe I can convince my wife to open up our house to guest.  I live only 4 miles from Lake Eva and sometimes pass it while on my rides.

4 days left until registration opens and the website hasn't even been updated with location or registration fees. Should we wait until some more info is available? Does this race typically fill quickly?

No, it takes a while to fill up. I did it 2010, 2011 and it filled up late. I have a funny feeling they are still trying to figure it out. It used to say Nov 23rd, now I don't think they say anything. My bet is it won't open the 23rd, but we'll see.

Did you see that the web site no longer states that registration opens on Nov 23.  Just says to check back for the official launch date.

Yup- I just noticed they took the date off too so came here to check the forum. This cannot be good for business. And this on top of the recent Clearwater 5150 cancellation due to low registration numbers.

I sent them an email asking for some information and this was the reply:

"Hi Raul-

Thank you for your interest in Ironman 70.3 Florida, scheduled for May 20, 2012!

We're in the final phase of permitting for the event and anticipate opening online registration in early December. Please continue to check Floridahalfironman.com or Ironman.com for news, updates and registration information.

Thank you for your patience and we look forward seeing you 2012!"

Ehh.. Things don't seem to be very stable at the moment.

It seems they are still finalizing the course (whether that be Disney or elsewhere).  I emailed asking what the refund policy was if they changed the venue after sign up.  Got the following response:

"Thank you for your email. In the event that the venue is changed to another
location besides Disney, our refund policy remains the same, a partial refund.
However, location details will be announced before, or fairly soon after
registration opens, as we must have everything squared away before hand. These
final details about course location/updates are why registration has been pushed
back, as we are waiting for them to be finalized before opening
registration."

Word in the local community is a deal has been signed for Haines City. We'll see.

I plan to register for this event for 2012.  I was told registration will be open Nov 23rd at noon EST. I expected it to fill up quickly, but why hasn't it in the past, do you think?  IMFL fills up fast.

I'll be in Tampa/St Pete in April/May.  Can anyone suggest any other events? (not St  A's been there, done that and has been a disappointment every time)

Thanks!

Well then that ride won't prepare you for the out and back section of IMFL where you can lose fillings because the road is so rough.  That was by far the only aspect of IMFL that I wasn't prepared for.  I adjusted after a bit...but that section of road isn't pretty.

Back on topic...I was interested in signing up for this but sounds like they are still trying to iron a lot of things out.  I think I'll go into a holding pattern to see how it all pans out.

Yep, heard plenty of people talking about that this year (and the crazy winds).  I'm hpoing they smooth out those roads by next year!  Also hope the construction around the host hotel is done as well, that was a nightmare just to get around in.  We also drove most of the rest of the course this year when we went up there and likely will again next year.

Permitting, good luck with that. The Haines city council, assuming it is there has their finger in everything and with their heads so far up their you know what, it may take weeks to iron out.

Interesting. In briefly reading what is posted online, it doesn't look like bike check in is mandatory the day before. Prior years bikes have had to be checked in on the Saturday and left in transition overnight. It seems as though bikes can be checked in on the morning of the race.

Is the bike loop seems to be in a totally separate location than the swim and run? Any insight on this?

That's just the way it looks on the bike course map since they don't show Lake Eva on the map. Lake Pierce is about 15 miles to the southeast of Lake Eva.  Transition will be right next to Lake Eva and then you head out to Lake Pierce in a roundabout way and then make your way back.

Might think twice about that. Depending where you are in St. Pete your looking at 1:45-2:00hrs to get to the race site. Thats alot of lost sleep time to be in a vehicle.
