Hello! Just got on the forum today and I am overwhelmed by all the great information and support here!

This is my first year of doing anything athletic. I started running on February 1st and ran my first 5K in late March. In April I bought a bike for $75 at our local bike cooperative for a healthier commute and in late May I joined an 8 week class at the Y to learn to swim (I am a really late bloomer). Did my first triathlon in June, second in July and just did my third on September 4th, all sprints.

I am thoroughly addicted! I have my first duathlon coming up on October 1st, the Bourbon Chase on October 7th and 8th and my first half marathon on October 23rd. I plan to do at least one olympic distance tri next summer as well.

I need all the help/advice I can get!

Thanks :D

I grew up in Lexington! Welcome to this wonderful world.

I have a question. Does the bourbon chase involve actual bourbon? Because if so, I may have to forgo my planned Pumpkin Chase 5K and do that one instead.

haha why yes it does! It is a 200 mile relay race through all the bourbon distilleries in KY ending in downtown Lex with a huge bourbon drinking party!!!

Nails--

First of all, welcome to the site.  Secondly, you have to be tough as "Nails" to get that sleeve tattoo.

I am a UK Alum and was just back in Lexington while training and vacationing before and after Ironman Louisville.

This site is wonderful, and I am quite positive you will learn a lot.  One common theme that you will encounter will be the importance of finding a reputable LBS (local bike shop).  I can say first hand that Swim Bike Run of KY on Ashland has it covered.  I stopped in a few times while on my trip and was thoroughly impressed.  If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to check them out.

I hope you get exactly what you want out of the sport of triathlon.  You have come to a great place to learn.

Nathan

Thanks Nathan, I must agree so far, this site is wonderful, full of information and inspiration! I love Swim Bike Run, it has been a great resource and I am sure it has helped Lexington and the surrounding areas to be such a great place for tri sports. We also have an amazing bike co-op called Broke Spoke. It is run by volunteers and members and is full of donated gear and equipment. There are several opportunities each week to go in and work with a bike mechanic who instructs you on doing your own bike maintinence and repair and you get to use their fancy tools! I love that I get to work on my bike with my own hands and actually know what I am doing! Plus I bought my bike there and it was hands down the BEST $75 bux I ever spent :-)
