5150 Triathlon Series
55F / 13C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 39m 57s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 30-34 W
Age Group Rank = 7/
Event warmup:

Swam about 10 minutes in the dark, cold lake. Sans wetsuit. Froze until the start.
Swim
  • 23m 9s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Ninth wave in the water. Swam over many people in front of me. Accidentally hooked around a girl's arm during my catch and she screamed profanity at me. It's dark, there are a bunch of people in the water. I can't see... Get over it!
What would you do differently?:

I think it was pretty crappy to put the 15-39 women behind the clydesdales and athenas. I also think it was crappy for the 5150 people to put "No Wet Suits" on their website and then change their mind at the race. It's a championship race. I understand they couldn't predict the water temp. drop, but don't make such a bold statement on the website.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

It was so slick running through the mud through T1. Perhaps a carpet or something would have been appropriate. The run from swim exit to the bike was about a quarter of a mile. Considering the distance, I'm ok with the T1 time.
Bike
  • 1h 14m 39s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.97 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't like the bike course. It was one of my worst rides of the season. The road conditions for the last two miles were not championship quality.
What would you do differently?:

Prepare on cobblestone, I guess...
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Kept my shoes on considering how muddy and slick the transition area was.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 57m 12s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Horrible! Worst run ever. I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my foot days before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Went to the med tent to get something warm. My lips and fingertips were blue.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Driving 13 hours the day before. Freezing before the race. Training in 100 degree heat with high humidity and not being prepared for the cold.

Event comments:

I expected a little better effort from the WTC for the 5150 Championships. It seems like they just wanted to get a hand in the Olympic distance, but didn't make an effort to separate the 5150 events from whatever triathlon they were connecting too. The only difference between the 5150 and the regular Hy-Vee was the finisher's medal. USAT definitely conducts better championship events. It was an awesome experience to watch the pros, and I'm glad we drove to Iowa just to experience that.
