Hello everyone. My name is Jeff Emrick. I am from Sidney, Ohio. I am 39 years old have been married 12 years and have a 9 year old daughter and a 6 year old son. We all enjoy the outdoors. We bike a lot as a family and love camping. Just did my first Sprint Tri (non traditional, canoe instead of swim) Sept 10th. It was great and now I'm hooked. I have been a off and on runner and biker for years. Last 3 years I have been running local 5 and 10K's. I have always wanted to do a Tri but not a swimmer. I am going to take some swim classes this winter at the YMCA. Now I don't feel like I just lurking. Jeff

Hi Jeff, welcome to BT and congrats on completing your first triathlon. A lot of people come into triathlon as non-swimmers and find that after a while they really enjoy it. Good luck with the swim classes.

Welcome to the site. I started swimming last November and completed a 1/2 IM a few weeks back, and I'm one of many people on this site with similar stories. Start out swimming slow and easy, and the distance will grow quickly. Good luck!

Hello, I am like Jeff and am new to BT. I am doing the Couch to 5K. Can I ask a question: It tells me on my calendar to walk for 27 minutes and then has a comment ----- | 3m |

What is the ----- | 3m | mean? b/c then the next week it says to walk again for 27 min but then it says ----- | 6m | Is it asking me to double my distance in the same time period.

Hi Julia, welcome. I took a look at your planned training log and saw what you did.

The values are dependent on what heading they're under. The 27m walking is listed under "Sports" and the ----- | 3m | is under running. The dashes represent time and 3m means 3 miles. It isn't really clear at first. Which view were you looking at?

Mike

This is site is weird to navigate. I am on teh 5k to couch and that ----3m is not only in the walking session but also the ----6m. my progrma has no running, again, I canonly assume its miles, but i can't belive they want me to double my miles in the same time period. All of this is VERY confusing and no one is really helping. I have asked this question now 5 times.

Not to hijack this thread but I will try to answer your question. The best advice I can give you is, do what you can. If you can walk 3 miles, great. The next time you go out walk 3 miles again but this time try to do it a little faster. As the 3 miles gradually gets easier, start increasing your distance. Don't make to big of a jump though because there is a possiblity of an injury. Here is a time / distance pace for you to keep in mind. A brisk walk is usually at a 15 minute per mile pace. The important thing to keep in mind though is do what you can.

If you dont own a heart rate monitor I would suggest purchasing one. A basic model will run you about 40.00 bucks. This is an invaluable tool that allows you to exercise at your max potential.

Good luck and keep at it. Also if you post in the category of Triathlon Talk, you will usually get quick responses to your questions.

This is a couch to program, which means you start off with a lot of walking which then gradually transitions into running.

m - stands for minutes.

so.  Walk 27 minutes, run 3 minutes.  (in the same workout would be what you want to do, I'd guess)  You can probably put your three minutes of running anywhere in the 27 minutes walking - for a total 30 minute workout.  Walk 9 minutes, run 1 minute, repeat 3x would be what I would do.

The --- represents the distance (you only get this option with swim/bike/run) but since there isn't a distance associated it comes across as ---.  FWIW, most plans are based on either distance or time, and this one is based on time.

Hey Jeff, Welcome!

Don't let the Swim intimidate you.  I struggled for some time with swimming then one day it just clicked.  Swimming for me was all mental.  As soon as I learned how to relax I could finally go and go and go.  I'm still not fast and I still swim with a nose plug, but at least I n olonger panic.

Good luck and we all look forwarding to reading your first race report.

-Michael
