The 2011 Trek Speed Concept 7 series uses TCT Carbon.  The 2012 uses OCLV 500 series carbon.

Does anyone know the difference?  I like the 2011 but if the OCLV carbon is more reliable/better, then I would just assume drop the extra $350 for the 2012.

Thanks

What is the difference between OCLV and TCT carbon?

In recent years Trek has introduced several new carbon technologies. Our OCLV carbon is among the most demanded carbon products in the bicycle industry and has been a staple in our lineup since its original production. In order to continue delivering sufficient quantities of OCLV product, and to offer high quality carbon frames at a lower price, we’ve developed Trek Carbon Technology (TCT) frames. These TCT frames are designed and engineered by the same people who are responsible for the Tour winning OCLV technology. These less expensive frames still offer all the benefits of carbon such as lightweight, increased stiffness and longer fatigue life.

So is it just labelling or is the process different?

It may all be moot because I like the Blue color scheme of the 2012.  Will be easier to find in T1.  As long as I know that I am getting a Tri bike for its sexiness, I might as well get the color I like.

get the 2012 and hopefully they have worked out some of the bugs from the 2011 version. Love the bike and it is fast but needs lots of loving care. Bent a rim on it this week. Been fidgeting with the brakes all summer. And it has dropped the chain a more than a few times.

I just went down the 2011 or 2012 road with the SC though I was going with the 9.9. In any case there is a thread on "that other forum" called the Official speed concepts owners thread. It is 125+ pages long and has a ton of input from one of the design engineers Carl Matson so it is a good read.

In any case and carbon type aside I would go 2012 to avoid some of the 1st generation issues that might still be present on any stock bikes you find on the dealer floor. If you go for the 2011 make sure it has all the next gen mods on it. I.E. the newer draft box as the original rubbed. The seat post would slip on the 7 series so in Jan of 11 they put out a different clamp. There were some brake parts that got some love too. As well as some other assorted things that went in to later in the year production bikes as they came off the line.

Good luck and either way it is a killer bike!

The OCLV technology got moved to Taiwan, so the 2012 frames are moderately better than the 2011 for that reason.  Last year only the 9 series got OCLV, as those bikes are hand made in Wisconsin, and for whatever reason the bikes in Taiwan couldn't be made in the same way.  This year you still have to get the 9 series to get the best caliber of carbon, but the 7 still has the same technology.

Edit: and as an owner of a 2012 SC 7 I can say the color combo is amazing!

It's likely that I'm buying a SC 7.2 in the very near future and I'm absolutely going with a 2012.

Any thoughts on comparing value/performance between 7.2 and 7.5?

I've got a 2011 SC 7.2.  Bought it in June and it's been great.  I'm not sure if I got some of the Gen 1.5 upgrades or not, but it's been very reliable and I haven't had a single issue.  Well, the engine is kind of slow, but other than that.
I even took a 40mph offroad adventure with several jumps and the frame held up great.  (see: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=254847&posts=15&mid=3530745&highlight=close+call&highlightmode=1&action=search#M3530745

Also, I was looking at the 7.5 and the 9's when I got mine and my budget ultimately forced me into the 7.2.  At the time I was bummed because I wanted the best of the best, but now I'm so happy I got the 7.2.  I'm now able to get the upgrades that I want to get versus having all the money dumped into the Bontrager stock "upgrade" parts.  I'm not saying they're bad, but I think I can piecemeal what I want from the manufacturers I want into my bike now.  Ultimately my bike will be as expensive as a SC 9, but it will have the brand upgrades I want.

Thanks for the advice.  I think the savings on the 7.2 can pay for most of my race season.

Keep in mind that you get a lifetime warranty from Trek on the frame - so in the long run you're covered regardless of buying a 2011 or 2012.
