Extreme Veteran 3177 | Subject: School me on football (soccer) rules! So I got invited by one of my friends to go to a Seattle Sounders match tomorrow. I have never been a big sports fan, whether it is soccer, football, baseball etc. but given the friend I am going with and the way Seattle loves this team I am expecting a good time. However - other than some obvious things, like putting the ball in the goal to score and not using their hands to play (except the goalie) what are the rules I should care about or know about? What constitutes an illegal tackle or move? is there an offsides rule? what constitutes a red card vs a yellow? I tried to do some reading on the rules last night but they get pretty involved in the rule book/text I was reading so I am hoping someone(s) on here can spell them out plainly. Happy Friday COJ! |

Yellow Card - Warning for a dangerous play typically. 2 yellow's and your gone. Red Card - Flagrant foul automatic ejection. Off Sides - When the ball is kicked, all of the attacking players must be in front of the last defender, ie the defender needs to be between the goalie and the attacker. Once the ball is kicked, it doesn't matter. There are some exceptions to this rule, but this is the jist of it. Corner kick - anytime the ball rolls out of the end line last touched by an defensive player, it's a corner kick. Goal kick - same as above but offensive player is last to touch.
Slide tackles are acceptable as long as you get the ball. If you don't get the ball it's a foul.
That's about it I think. Edited by JoshR 2011-09-09 10:53 AM |

Regular 94 Miami, FL | Subject: RE: School me on football (soccer) rules! There's not a whole lot more. Normally legal tackles are the ones that go for the ball. If they go for the other guy's leg, it's a foul. Two yellow cards make a red card. A red card is expulsion. A red card can be given directly for very obvious anti-sportsmanship behavior, but are rare. Yellow cards are given for excessive violence, wasting time, things like that. The offside rule is probably one of the most complex. Basically an offside happens when the player is beyond the last non-goalie player. However this only counts when the passer kicks the ball. If the ball is already in motion, the player can move closer to the goal to catch the pass. One important aspect is that the goalie can't catch a pass from a team mate with his hands (unless it was headed). Other than that, it's pretty straight forward.... |

Expert 839 Central Mass | Subject: RE: School me on football (soccer) rules! The one offsides exception that comes up the most - but usually only at lower levels, not any pro levels - is about the mid line. Basically, there is no offsides if all the players are on the defending side of the field. i.e. a forward could be hanging out alone by the center line - all the defenders are closer to the opposing goal. As long as the forward is on his defence's side of the center line, he can never be offsides. Like I said, doesn't happen in the pros. Occasionally in high school and lower though when defenders are more interested in scoring than in playing defence. |

Pro 4838 | Subject: RE: School me on football (soccer) rules! One team kicks the ball one way and the other team kicks the ball the opposite way. They attempt o kick said ball into a goal at the far end of the field. Players fall down alot in attempt to get a free or penalty kick. They have orange slices at halftime. Sometimes the fans will riot, mostly in foreign countries because we here in America have another form of FOOTBALL we watch. |

It's not like any other sporting event around here. Get a good night's sleep before you go. Prepare to be on your feet / jumping / chanting the entire game and it'll be loud. They sell out nearly all their games, with higher attendance than any other team in the league, by a fair margin. |

In my life I have been to exactly 1 professional sports game (a mariners game 2 years ago where I was also in a private box - got invited by a good friend luckily!) so I will have nothing to compare it too. My only issue is that I get claustrophobic in large crowds so I am hoping that will not happen here but my friend assures me it will be fine. If not - well, there is always beer

I'll help you out with my personal favorite ref insult overheard when I was just a little kid of 12.
Get off your knees ref, you're blowing the game. |

Just cheer when your friend cheers, get mad when your friend gets mad, and remember phrases like "Wow...awesome" or "horrible...simply horrible" and use them at the right time. If somebody says "Did you see that?", guage if it was said in excitement or is an upset manner and then simply respond with "I can't believe that just happened" (that's a universal phrase.....but inflection will be needed....) |

X2. A Sounders game is an event. Enjoy and GO SOUNDERS!! One important part of the rules that I think has been missed is that a foul results in a "free kick". This means the team that was fouled gets to place the ball at the spot of the foul and kick it unencumbered by the defense. It the fould occurs in the offensive end relatively close to the goal this creates a scoring opportunity. If the foul occurs inside the larger box surrounding the goal, then a "penatly kick" is given. The ball is placed on the spot and only the goalie is allowed to defend. These fouls are judgment calls and can create some of the controversy you alluded to. Edited by zed707 2011-09-09 1:20 PM |

Indirects have to hit a teammate first. Don't worry too much when one happens vs another, but just know that they exist. |

One more tidbit: When you lose a man on a red card, you can't substitute someone in to replace him -- you play short the rest of the game. Also there's one more pure red card offense - deliberately fouling to prevent a goal. Usually that's a slide tackle from behind or grabbing a jersey or anything that impedes progress if the shooter has no players left to beat besides the goalkeeper. Another variation of this is a deliberate handball to stop the ball from going in. |

Champion 7821 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: School me on football (soccer) rules! I have a rules question also. My kid was playing goalkeeper in his U-8 league this morning and he made a save at the goal line. He picked up the ball and was carrying it closer to the top of the penalty area to kick it out when the ref stopped him and made him go back and kick it from inside the smaller box close to the goal opening. I thought the keeper could handle the ball Anywhere inside the penalty box, so I'm not sure why the ref brought him back inside the goal box. Can someone clarify this rule for me? |

Yes, you must have lots of Academy Award winning death scenes. Anyway, I'm very jealous! Enjoy! Just jump, holler, wave a scarf in the air, and boo/cheer with the crowd and you're good. I know when I played soccer around age 7-8 the goalie was only allowed to take 4 steps with the ball when they picked it up in our league. Might be a similar rule? |
