Veteran 176 | Subject: Rage, and not just the waters My first triathlon, an Olympic, was canceled this weekend. Was scheduled to race tomorrow morning and they said the waters were over flooded and the roads were debris filled. I trained the better part of this year for this thing and I am really frustrated. I went out for a run today and it felt as hard as when I first started running. Is this due to lack of motivation? Anyways, I e-mailed everyone like the Race Director and fellow triathletes who were scheduled got an e-mail with vouchers for free stuff, t shirts, etc and I never got that e-mail. I paid 108 for this event and trained for it to have it canceled and cannot even get a refund. That is a lot of money when you are unemployed bringing in 1.00 a week on average. Anyways, is there anything I can do to become motivated again and continue my work? Good thing I didn't buy Tri shorts or anything. I bought a chip strap but that was it. I knew this was not going to work out but I still had hope so I trained. How comes I am the only one who didn't get the e-mail? I know I am on their list because they e-mailed about the race beforehand. This thread really isn't informative or anything, I just had to let it out somewhere because I am that frustrated. |

This thread really isn't informative or anything, I just had to let it out somewhere because I am that frustrated.[/QUOTE Ok, probably a troll I know but I'll take the bait. 1. If you only make $1 a week, you cannot afford triathlon, sorry, that's the way it is-priorities 2. If it was truly cancelled and not changed into a duathlon or something there is likely to be a refund 3. There are/will be other events 4. Motivation is and should be a personal thing, not about some event someone else staged for you but about your own self actualization; just redirect it toward something else. If you need a triathlon to be motivated I am truly sorry, inspired yes, motivation no. It is like people who post inflammatory, argumentative or silly stuff on internet forums to achieve some sense of importance or satisfaction,or to get people to feed into their own emotional neediness, they just need to grow up a bit and learn to meet their own needs. Veteran 138 | Subject: RE: Rage, and not just the waters So not even a duathlon either. Too bad. But honestly, I'd take it as a sign that the universe was looking out for you. You weren't ready. Train hard and be ready for the next one. |

Master 2236 Denison Texas | Subject: RE: Rage, and not just the waters Maybe I came off too harsh, it is reasonable to be disappointed. The motivation is from within-resolve to be better prepared for the next event, pick something else to focus on for now..some running events perhaps or just improving your weaknesses. |

Are you finally admitting that you weren't ready for the swim distance? I'm very sorry this happened. There's no way to look at it other than to say it just really, really sucks. But they canceled the event for the athletes' safety. You live to race another day thanks to them, and that's what you're gonna do. As for the money thing: find the earliest race you can find for next season, start saving for it, and train like hell from now till then. It's all you can do at this point. |

Subject: RE: Rage, and not just the waters I would be frustrated too but you also wouldn't want to race if the conditions are not safe. Motivation for me comes from a love for swimming, cycling and running. Race or not, I still do what I love. I just work a lot harder when I am healthy enough to race . Hope you at least get your money back! I agree about volunteering. You would learn a lot, it would help keep you motivated and most race directors give you discounts or free race entries. I don't think you are a troll. |

Talk to the race director, or facility itself. Local Y's around here sometimes offer discount entries for special circumstances, volunteering, &/or ability to pay. Doesn't hurt to ask. I know you are disappointed & upset about your tri, but sometimes it helps to take a step back. Training you built now is not wasted but will benefit you in the future. And sad to say many PA residents lost much more in the flooding than a tri entry. Edited by Oldteen 2011-09-09 7:18 PM |

Master 2264 Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Rage, and not just the waters Dude, I can't feel much sympathy for the woe-is-me. You're missing a race. One race. 15 miles from me, thousands of people have lost everything they have from these flood waters. Everything. At least 7 people are dead from this flood. This is the worst since Agnes in 1972, and it's close to that. Lancaster is not far from some hardcore devastation. You missed out on a race. Get some perspective. |

That is a lot of money when you are unemployed bringing in 1.00 a week on average. I know this isn't what your looking for (at best, look at it as tough love, at worst just consider me an unsympathetic SOB)...but if you're unemployed, making zilch, have you considered that dropping $108 on a race was not the most prudent thing to do? You're going to get a lot of sympathy and support from others here, because that's the kind of place this is. But along with the sympathy and support, I'm going to throwing this in - Don't spend money on a "nonrefundable if cancelled" race if you can't afford to lose it. JC |

Expert 839 Anaheim Hills, CA | Subject: RE: Rage, and not just the waters Sorry to see you lose $$ but like on the other forum that you trolled, your amazon purchases were stalked over there and showed that you spent a lot of $$ on gear. How you only make $1 a week being unemployed and spent that much on gear is beyond me. |

Get some perspective. x2 I agree but I also can understand your disappointment. Why not do an olympic tri by yourself. It'll give you a lot of satisfaction to show yourself what all the training was for. Compete in the first JSChristian44 annual Trollathlon. I bet you'll at least place in your age group if not take overall I did this last summer after a last minute work scheduling conflict kept me from doing a race I had been training for. I went to my gym and did the race on my own and I was actually buzzing with (my own private) excitement afterwards. |

Veteran 138 | Subject: RE: Rage, and not just the waters Yes, it's too bad you missed your race and feeling disappointed makes sense. But if missing a race makes you feel like you're in H then I would encourage you to find more things in your life that give your life meaning. This is a hobby for you. That's it. I would feel like H if I lost my family, maybe if I lost my home - that's it. Everything else is a bonus. Choose to be happy about what life has given you rather than raging about a minor inconvenience. |

Try to remember that "more alive" feeling. Chasing that 'high' is prob why many of us enjoy training. |
