Subject: How do you put it all together?
I am training for my first half, and I have been using Don Fink's plan. My training is going well, and I can see that I am making some progress. Individually each part is coming together. Biking is my weakness. I am slow and steady, but some days I am tired at the end of my long rides. This is without a long swim, and I wonder if I will have the energy to do the run. How does it all come together if most of the training is focused on each sport with a bike/run brick in the middle of the week?

taper, adrenaline, and a good nutrition plan.  Good luck with your race.

Edited to add:  Remember, when you are going out for the long ride on the weekends, you are coming off a week of training.  My long run this morning was pretty slow, but I also did a tempo run last night.  Race day, your legs should be WAY fresher than they are for a typically long ride.

^^^^^

In fact a common "trap" for newer endurance athletes is that after the taper they feel SOOOO good on race day they push too hard early then crash & burn.  Been there done that Embarassed.   Remember the old adage that the last 1/3 of your race will feel much harder than the first 2/3rds. As marathon runners put it- there's 1st 20mi then the last 10k.

Trust your plan, taper well, pace easy early, & follow your hydration/fueling plan.

You WILL do fine on race day!!!!!

x2 on Daffodil's comment about Taper/Adrenaline/Nutrition. As well as the other posts.

Trust the plan. That became my motto, and it was true.

here's how I look at training and racing....each day is a puzzle piece.  you can look to the picture to see how it's going to look, and where you should put each puzzle piece, but try not to get caught up in the totality of it.  Sometimes you have to turn them around and try them in different spots.  But come race day, you have laid them all down and you get to look at the lovely puzzle.

The best races are the ones that feel slow and easy for 75% of the race. The last 25% is for pushing.

1stTimeTri - 2011-09-10 5:35 PM Trust in your plan and it will happen.

Your race day nutrition plan is as important as your swim/bike/run fitness.  Be sure to have a tested nutrition plan and stick to it.
