Total Time = 2h 55m 23s
Overall Rank = 289/567
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 32/42
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4 am for breakfast (2 muffins and a gatorade); back to sleep.

Went to the race about 2 hrs prior; set up, then rested.
Event warmup:

Some active stretching and a short swim.
Swim
  • 29m 32s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had trouble finding a clear lane at the start (should have gone out towards the middle more). Had a really hard time sighting -- couldn't see the second or third buoys until I was really close. I think I swam extra.
What would you do differently?:

Start more towards the middle and go out more aggressively to get a good clear lane.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Felt like I had a good T1, although there are definitely some things I could do to get quicker.
What would you do differently?:

Helmet/sunglasses on while getting wetsuit off; find better socks that go on easier (or make the leap to sockless).
Bike
  • 1h 20m 38s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.49 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike; nutrition worked well, although I need to figure out how to ingest without losing so much momentum.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to pick my times to ingest my gels so I don't lose so much momentum.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Okay T2, but not my best effort.
What would you do differently?:

Don't stop to take a drink; don't try to get the shoes perfect; don't stand there while putting on my hat.
Run
  • 1h 01m 31s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

For my first at this distance, I'm happy with the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, I'm just slow.

Event comments:

Really enjoyed the race and the location!

Michael - I did the lobsterman in about the same time as you did, but my swim was much slower this year than last year.  I'm curious if you did the race last year, and how you thought the swim compared.

Sorry for not responding sooner.  This was my first time with the Lobsterman (first Olympic).  The issue I had with the swim was seeing the 2nd and 3rd buoys.  Once I made the first turn, I couldn't see anything until I was pretty close to the buoy.  Made it really hard to sight!  If asked, I'd encourage them to put in a few more buoys to help with sighting.

Oh, yeah, one more thing -- I noticed what felt like a pretty strong wind coming off the shore pushing against us.  The last leg of the swim was by far my slowest even though I was pushing harder.  That may have been what people meant by "current."
