Subject: Deal: Race tires and Latex tubes w/low Crr?

I need to get some new tires for my Zipp 404s. Looking at the AFM tire testing I want tires that have low Crr.

Anyone find a good deal on one of the top rates tires?

What about latex tubes....I have Michelin long stem latex which means I still need valve extenders but presta valve is visible above my rims. Have any of you who have used removable core latex tubes find they work better. If so which brand did you buy and from where?

Probikekit.com always seems to have the best prices when I go looking.  Sometimes wiggle.co.uk as well.

I have the Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX and am very happy with them.  Around $60 right now which isn't the cheapest I've seen them - I think I got them closer $50 when I bought them.

Bontrager makes both latex tubes and the R4 aero tires.  I used them at Coeur d'Alene last June.  Had to pick them up at a Trek shop though - couldn't find the tires online.

Michelin Pro 3 and Pro 3 Light are different tires right?

Does the Pro 3 Light only come in light blue?

How are they getting on and off the rims?

If you have other tires how do they compare getting them on and off?

I have tried some different brands and some I struggle with hand strength to get them off. Pro 3s work well for me.

When I first got them, it was a real bugger to get them on and off.  Now that I've done it a few times they are no different than the Pro 3s.  I race on the Vitorrias and train on the Pro 3s.

You say you struggle to get them off - is that with or without a tire lever?  I always use a lever to get them off - I *can* get them off without but don't see the point in trying if I don't have to....

Tires that came on Zipps last year, with tire irons were a struggle to get on and off much more than new Pro 3s.

I took them off and swapped them to tires I knew I could get on and off quickly.

Ok, well like I said, they were a bugger the first couple of times but after that no problem.  I've heard people say to throw them in the dryer for a couple of minutes and it softens them up a bit and makes it really easy.  Haven't tried that myself.

I think the Michelin latex tubes I have are removable core; I'll have to check though. I currently have Vittoria tubes and they don't have removable cores and I fought with my extenders on Saturday. However, they do seem easier to work with than the Michelin ones so I'll take that.

As for tires, usually ProBikeKit but I don't have any experience with good race tires that were not a huge pain to install and remove the first few times.

I found Michelin Pro 3 light for $43.99 free shipping or Vittoria Open Corsa EVO CX (320 TPI) for $52.99 also free shipping both from US based on line retailers.  Pro 3 lights I have found are only in light blue where the Vittoria's come in black/red that will look much better on my Red/black/white Orbea and they have better Crr. They are close on Crr....0.00250 vs. 0.00254.

I'm doing an IM AB in two weeks prices of these are cheaper than PBK and I will get them faster.

Other suggestions?

I would personally go with the cheaper tire in that case but if you would prefer that everything matches then go with the Vittorias. I have heard they can be really tough to get on the first time though.

I just bought Vittoria Open Corsa EVO CXs from Velomine for $45 each and some Challenge latex tubes for $5 each as they were out of the Viittorias. Call them because their prices are better than what they show on the website. Did my first race on them this weekend and was super happy. Although they were a huge PIA to get on the first time.

i don't know your definition of tough but zipp tangente is a tire that will go down in my memory as the hardest freaking tire to put on EVER.

i had to put them in the dryer for 5 min to warm them up then just put them on a wheel without a tube so they don't pinch the tube.  don't get me started about putting them on a HED3...oh lord i thought i was going to throw the wheel out i was so pissed.

Pro race 3 lights are pretty risky for flats (That's what they are - pr3s with the belt removed). The Evos have some protection, some guys ride them year round.

Vitorria latex does have removable cores. I have them with these core extenders

http://trisports.com/devaex.html

Gives you just enough room with a 808 to pump it up.

I have been racing and training this year on the Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX and they have been a great tire.  I am replacing the rear at 1400 miles (front still lots of life left).  I don't rememeber any issues with getting the tire on the first time but I do believe I left them sit in the sun the day put them on.

My plan was to only use the tires for racing but I got lazy and used them for training also.  Although they don't last as long as true training tire, they sure roll nice.

I double checked this morning and I was backwards; Vittorias are removable cores, Michelins are not.

I posted the following in the gear section a while back. There was some new tire data posted in a BTR blog.  The new Conti Grand Prix Supersonic (Chili) was considered the new fastest clincher (ignoring the VFR as an outlier).  It's also available in 20C and 23C.  A quick search fund some off-shore sites for $50 and less.

Donto - 2011-08-03 10:27 AM

Oh btw, it not in the SS yet but in one of the BTR blog threads 4 months ago he posted data for two tires with Vred latex tubes.  The new Continental Grand Prix Supersonic Chili (23)/Vred Latex had a Crr of 0.00226 and also again the Velo Flex Record 20 with the Vred Latex, Crr 0.00219 (Used Tire).

The Velo Flex Record 20/Vred Latex tube should be the new king of the clinchers, but he stated the Continental Grand Prix Supersonic was: "which is actually the fastest clincher tire and tied for the fastest overall".  I also wonder why the SS wasn't be updated yet with this data.

I can attest to this!!!  I had a horrible time getting mine on for the first and second time.

Partly, it was my fault for not really knowing the technique to get them on, but they were tough none the less.

Definitely requires a tire lever and some force to get on, but you also have to be careful not to pinch the tube.

They are nice tires, and I've liked them so far.  I've had them on for a little over a month.

Do you have the Continentals? How tough were they to get on?

How durable have they been for you?

Which is better 20C or 23C for Zipp 404s?

Kathy,

I have Conti 4000s tires on two of my bikes and Conti sports on another. I run latex tubes on the 4000s's and cheap butyl tubes on the sports. I have never flatted and get about 2000 miles out of rear tires, even with time on the trainer. I don't find them hard to get on at all, but it's relative.

No I am not, I am currently running the conti GP4000s.

On my OEM Easton SL rims, the conti GP4000s were a b!tch to get on and off.  On my Felt TTR3 wheels they are easy so it all depends on your rim.
