As me ol' pappy used to say ... `If you dont like what's for dinner, go cook your own.'

I've been to many a race (even a HIM or two) where they don't serve post-race food. Not that big a deal. That's what Wendys and the triple decker cheeseburger is for!

I usually never eat post race food, I opt to save my appetite for "real good" bad food, like a fridays or something (always want a big hamburger post HIM).  this past weekend I didn't have that luxury, had to wait for hours for a friend getting an IV, so I had some cold pulled pork and boxed up potato salad that had been sitting out for hours. That made me very nervous...so I had a few bites and opted for the stale oreos and gatorade.

One century I did had the ODDEST choices at rest stops.  Celery and carrot sticks, tuna fish sandwiches, go-gurt (not sure it was refrigerated either), and tomato sandwiches.  Did they talk to the cyclists at all??

I think there is a lot of the "these are healthy athletes, they eat healthy stuff" thinking out there.  I really do feel for people with dietary restrictions. My poor friend on the IV couldn't have pork b/c of her religion.  for $200 for a race, I kinda expect more than 1 choice.

Funny story about that pancake breakfast.  My coach is the RD for that race. When I saw the flyer for this year I saw the pancake breakfast note but missed where it said it was new.   I indignantly asked my coach if they ate all the pancakes last year before I got there.  Hehe, she had to point out that they didn't have it last year.  Uh, oops.

Why not do both? I do.   Bunch of what they have there and usually pizza and some dessert later.

And regarding all the salad, I guess not everyone realizes that there are different kinds of healthy foods depending on what aspect needs the nourishment.  Was the swim particularly nasty and they might be trying to load you up with Vitamin C?

All I want post race is chocolate chip cookies and a diet coke.  And not just one or two cookies.  I'm talking a dozen.

I did my first tri early this spring and my family came along to volunteer. My son is in culinary school and made wraps and sandwiches using the stuff the RD provided. He did custom orders for people with special requests.

We were a pretty popular family that day! They missed seeing me cross the finish, but it was great seeing them making and serving food. And, knowing I wasn't going to be anywhere near the FOP, they even put aside some Fig Newtons for dad. Nom nom nom

blbriley - 2011-09-15 8:37 AM I've got to jump in before H20 gets here.  Food at the finish line is just for the winners.  If you just complete the race, you have no business eating the winner's food.

No- you're not nuts. That does seem odd.

That said, remember that many times organizations that put together races aren't administered by racers. I can hear the logic in the organizatonal meetings here:

Q: "What do you think they want at the finish line? Donuts? Pizza?"

A. "Nooo, they're athletes, they're healthy. They'll want salads and stuff..."

I've been in those meetings.

The heck of it is, at the finish line, I generally do want really bad food- greasy pizza, cake, cookies, Coke, chocolate anything, hot dogs, more pizza. Surprised

hahaha!  This reminds me of a local ride that was hosted by a high school marching band.  The band parents manned the rest stops.  One year I asked for water at a rest stop.  They said proudly, "We have gatorade.  Cyclists don't drink water!"  Since Gatorade causes GI problems for me (well, it did in the past, I have not had the desire to retest this!), this cyclist drinks water.  They did locate some for me when I asked about it but I thought that something as basic a water would be covered ;-)

At my last race they had French toast with sausage
and eggs. That was the best food I think I have ever had at the end of a race. That was very different.

I actually wouldn't mind the salads and pasta. I think I'm in the minority here because I can't stand finish line pizza. Cheap cold pizza that's been sitting in a box for hours? No thanks.

Last race my wife did they had a great Breakfast spread - and the awesomeness of it was they bought enough for everyone there - participants and spectators!  Now they are on to something - I did not even have to do any training or the race to eat a ton of sausage, bacon and biscuts & gravy!

I am not too picky about post race food.  I like the bananas and yogurt slection for the AM finishes.  If I got that after a race I think I would be pretty happy.  A cup of coffee would be good too, but I have never seen that at a race.

One race offered pasta with some sort of garlic based white sauce. Not an AM thing for me.

I went to one race where the RD, a wonderful person, provided cookies, brownies and lots of the good stuff.    I don't understand why more races don't just go straight to the cookies and heavy duty muffins.....and cookies.  Cookies with nuts and peanut butter and chocolate, oatmeal and raisans.............

Finished the FirmMan HIM in RI on 9/11.  They had a pig roast on site with baked potatoes, salad, and pasta.  It was fantastic.

Oh. So that's why there was no pizza at the finish line when I finished my last race. The winners ate it all before I got there.

That sounds awesome. I think I'm not normal because I can't eat really greasy food after I race or at least not a lot. I would love french toast and eggs. And cookies. Because you can never have enough cookies!

No. Just the lone winner. There can be only one.

I've had some good food after some races, so of the more expected food, and often none.  One race in Oregon offers clam chowder and beer.  And it's typically rainy and cold (cause it is Oregon) so really, what could be more perfect then something hot.  Another race I did had some good Mexican food, but the best was the watermelon's they had.  Not much better on a hot dusty day (mountain bike ride).  There is one running race company here that always has Mexican breakfast and smoothies and it is a pretty big hit.    What I like to have really depends on the race and the conditions.
