You all are making this sound like a lot of fun so I might have to sign up.  I did the 10 mile last year and loved it until the bus nightmare.  I did get on one of the first buses though.  From what I hear, Team Ortho might get themselves kicked out of Minneapolis which is too bad because I like the convenience on the west side of the river.

I don't know how to manage this, but if a bunch of us wear costumes we HAVE to get a group photo.

Keep your eye out for a pink crayon...

I'm in! Hopefully we will all be in similar corrals.

Do they even have corrals?  The most I remember from any other team ortho race are flags with paces and you self select.  Which usually means there are folks lined up at the 9 min/mile who walk in the first mile (wrong).    So, we could all meet by the 8 min/mile pace flag and then just run whatever

Actually we should meet by the fastest flag, so none of you faster folks will have to run through the crowd.

and I am mostly kidding

Yep, at my last team ortho race there were just flags. However, when I registered for the 1/2 they asked for an anticipated race time....so maybe they are making it more official at the start?

I can't remember what Team Ortho race it was that I did that they asked my anticipated time but ultimately, it did not matter.  They still had it just like always with the flags.  And I have noticed in all the races, the slower people love to start in the faster times and walk right away.... so aggravating.

Count me in on the 1/2 mary. Generally how much faster are times when you don't have to swim and bike before the run? I've only raced on 1/2 marathon, on the end of my HIM.

I think unless you're a very talented runner (and cyclist) - quite a bit faster. I am sure there's some algorithm..

Just my own experience is my half marathon "average" is about 2:15 (PR is 2:06) and my half iron 13.1 was 2:27 and I would say it went pretty well.

The start hurts in a different way, too.  Your legs feel fine, but your lungs aren't warmed up.

Rumor has it registration for the half ends tomorrow.

One more time, just to confirm, am I crazy to think about running this on the 29th, when I have a 70.3 on the 23rd?  I think I'm going to sign up, I'm just wondering (because this is all new to me) how much of a pain cave I'll be putting myself in.

I already put my vote in for crazy (pg 1), but no one ever listens to me.    Good luck and have fun in Austin!

So, who all will be there?  My friends are dropping like flies.   Two injured and one is sick, so not sure yet about her.   I have been sick too, but am better this week so I will be running.  I hope I can find the extra three miles in my somewhere, because my longest run in a LONG time has been 10 miles.

If you see a pink crayon, say hi!

I'll be there, but I haven't had time to get my costume organized.  Maybe I'll add that to today's list.

I'll be there but not in costume, since it is my first, I just want to get through it - hoping for a 2:15 finish - I will definitely say hi to a pink crayon. Good luck everyone!

If my friend (blue crayon) can't make it, I might change my mind.   I have always wanted to do a race in costume, but a half marathon seems to be overkill!

Good luck and I hope we do get a chance to say hi!

OK, I picked up the components of my costume today, and hopefully it won't be too hard to run in.  So keep an eye out for Bob Ross, and say hi if you see me!

ewengler - 2011-09-18 7:41 PM This is going to be my first half marathon!! I am so excited!

That will make two of us from BT!

Very cool!  When I heard it was an all-down hill course, I was sold.

How is your training going?  Are you using a plan? I'm sort of using the FIRST plan, but not doing much of the speed work it calls for.
I do sprint tris mostly, so this is a big leap in distance for me. Like you, I also plan to do my first HIM next year so I'm trying to get my first HM under my belt.

I'm still trying to come up with a costume.

I'm doing a 4-day a week plan... Intervals, pace, recovery and long run for the most part. I found it online. I was doing the FIRST program over the summer and had a fight with ITBS on the sprints. So I dropped it for a more subtle approach. This one is going well!

On the costume front, I too am thinking about it as well. One of my coworkers suggested going as an Angry Bird. Got a chuckle!

I love the IDEA of FIRST, but that caused my heel to "blow up" when I was marathon training 3+ years ago. I think it's an OK idea for 10 miles or a half, but a marathon needs more longer / easier runs. TOTALLY just me jumping in with my 2 cents because I saw FIRST!

I was REALLY hoping to run the 10 Mile in sub-70 with my 4.5 month old in the stroller, but I'm teaching a workshop on Saturday morning at 9. Dang.

BUT, that workshop is about 0.5 miles from the start right on Summit Ave (344 Summit Ave - 1 block before Western and 2 blocks before Summit "bends" back to being straight east-west). I hope to be out there by 8:30 to cheer you all past!! I'll try to have my camera, and I'll try to be on the left side of the road (which is the side of 344 Summit), so LOOK FOR ME and I'll snap your picture! If I hear "HEY STEVE!" I'll put the camera up to my eye and start shooting!

Good luck everyone!! Wish I could join you for the whole thing, but I'll only be able to be there for the first 0.5 miles!

Just got out to test the legs and see what Saturday might bring.  I'm happy to report I was able to run 3 miles at race pace with no issues!  Feeling good that this won't be a complete disaster!

Steve - I'll try to remember 344 Summit, but if I fail at that and you happen to see Bob Ross running past, snap away!
