Subject: So I am going to Vegas!

Ok the wife and I are taking a long weekend trip to Vegas for four days.  What to do where to stay!  We are pretty much doing it on the cheap and would love some insight for some fun things to do.

I heard they had some casinos there or something but have yet to confirm that.

School me on how one should do Vegas.  If it makes a difference we are arriving late Thursday the 29th of this month and departing the following monday.

Determine ahead of time how much money you plan to lose and don't plan on leaving Vegas a winner if you plan to play the slots. You can get good rates at a lot of the older strip hotels, but the rates do go up for the nights you are staying.

I would seriously consider renting a car and driving north to Zion NP and possibly even further to Bryce Canyon. About 2 hours or so and you're in one of the most beautiful places in the country IMO. Spend the night at the Desert Pearl or Cable Mountain Lodge. Do the Angel's Landing hike!

Thanks I will definitely look into that.  Forgot to mention that we dont't and won't be gambling.  Didn't pick Vegas specifically to visit, actually drew it by chance out of five possible cities to visit so we are going with it.

You have the Grand Canyon and Death Valley close by as well. I can't imagine staying in Vegas more than one night if I didn't gamble. Rental cars are usually pretty cheap in Vegas and we've used LAS as a starting point for lots of trips to the surrounding areas. The aspens might be blazing up in the Cedar Breaks NM area. There's a MTB ride from the top of Brian Head ski mtn that is a lot of fun also. All are pretty close in southern Utah

Arizona Hot Springs Hike

Nevada Hot Springs Hike

Take the River Boat from Lake Mead and do the dam tour about 3 hrs of your time

Lots of hikes to do at RedRock

Do a Kayak or pontoon boat ride down the black canyon

Saturday is Slam the Dam marathon swimming out at Lake Mead

Hike/Run through the tunnels at Lake Mead. Those are the tunnels they drilled/blasted to have access to build the dam.

Do the dam tour and check out the new little by-pass bridge.

If you want any additional info links to any of the above or specific outfitters I would recommend for a kayak trip down the black canyon let me know. my e-mail is CruseVegasATcox.net

Here are some pics we took last time we went down Black Canyon (just below Hoover Dam) with my cousin the Rocket Surgeon.

The strip clubs are fun.  Not exactly cheap, but fun.

Look at the casinos downtown too.  They are usually cheaper than the cheapest on the strip.

A Hawaiian friend of mine told me that the restaurant in the Californian has the best Hawaiian food outside of the islands too.

If you can get the time, the north rim of the grand canyon is fairly close (~270 miles each way...)  Sure, you basically have to drive through Zion to get there though

I would not drive to Zion from Vegas. I go there several times a year from Vegas, and I have NEVER made it in 2 hours.  Bryce is even farther away.  Anything in Southern Utah is going to take around 6 hours round trip, although hitting up Cedar City to see a play is always something we enjoy doing.  Of course, we stay at the cabin and make a weekend out of it.  No real use going to Vegas if you're just going to hit the road again IMO.

This is the best time of year to come to Vegas as the temps are dropping slightly and you can go do just about anything without dying from the heat.  I would head out to Red Rock and spend the day there.  Just as beautiful as Zion, although it isn't as big.  If you only stay as Zion for a day, you won't get to see much anyway.  Hit up Red Rock instead and save that gas money.  Next, I would look into a kayaking trip on the Colorado River below Hoover Dam (which you should also check out).  There are several kayaking companies out there, and I recommend Desert RATS. You can check them out on Trip Advisor, but I have been with them a few times and my wife and I love their services.  There are also several hikes along the Colorado River that you can do.  Those are some things I would look at if I were coming to Vegas. Of course, I am a local and have been for 25 years, so the casinos don't really appeal to me, but please feel free to come and leave as much money here as you would like.  Our local economy needs all the help it can get.  If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.  Have fun!

Makes a little more sense drivng to Zion from Vegas if you live where we do. It's the closest big airport, lots of cheap flights. I'll split the difference and call it a 2.5 hour drive to the park. Wink

I prefer all of the same outdoorsy things in Vegas already mentioned.   But, if you've never been, I really recommend a walk on the strip and check out the Bellagio water show at night.  It's my favorite Vegas thing, it never fails.  You can park for free in a lot (all?) of the big casinos.    The strip at night is a freak show and not to be missed!

I agree with BikerGrrrl. While I'm more of a hiking, biking kinda guy. Walking the strip at night should be done at least once in your life time.

I've been there twice and lost a total of $40, that was my limit. On my first trip to vegas I think I managed to play black jack for an hour and a half* and then go pump the rest into a slot machine for a total of about 3 hours. It was probably as expensive as going to the movies so if you view it as paying for entertainment, it's not that bad. However, having done it once I feel no more desire to do it again.

The second time I went to Vegas I didn't gamble at all. I took my self imposed $40 limit, rented a scooter for an hour to ride around, then bought a really nice cigar and strolled along the strip.

The fountain at the Belagio at night is really cool.

FYI, the Dam tour guides don't like when you put dam before everything. ie: "where's the dam bathroom?" "Where's the dam elevator?" "Can you point me to the dam souvenir shop." "I like the dam view." I imagine they've heard that dam joke before, but it's no less funny to me.

Both times I've been, Vegas was not our actual destination. While it's an extra 2 hours to Moab vs. flying into Salt Lake City, Vegas was substantially less expensive to fly into and was worth the extra drive. Plus, Mormons don't hand out prostitute trading cards.

I don't need much more then 8 hours to see what I want to see in Vegas Proper so we always just plan to fly into Vegas, go where we are actually headed then tack on 8-12 hours at the end of the trip to see the strip.

I collected them all. Even got the rare (or not so rare) lopsided boob job girl. I got to the point where I would check out which cards were being handed out and say no thanks if I already had it. The people handing out the cards were less than amused.

Apparently, what I like to do in Vegas is make an arse out of myself, even when sober.

On my first trip there, we stayed in the Terrible's Hotel and Casino. Despite the name, it's decent. Not like staying at the MGM Grand (we stayed there one night for the experience) but at $30 a night if you prebook it was an awesome deal.

Looks like they raised it to $40 a night since I was there.

Check out kshop.com,  this is a radio shopping show like QVC for Vegas happenings.  They have tickets for all kinds of shows and comedy stops as well as restaurants at 50 to 75 % off.  I saw Pen and Teller for for $35 for two of us as well as The Fab 4 for the same price. The Cannery is an off the strip casino (mostly for locals) that has concerts for very cheap prices, and if you are really hinky, you can drive over the hump to Pahrump to visit the famous Chicken Ranch. (legal brothels there).

If you wish to rent a bike there are plenty of places to rent and ride, including Las Vegas Cyclery that will take you out mountain biking and even provide lunch.

People don't really realize that the strip is only a very small part of Vegas.  We have shooting (indoors and out), horseback riding in the Red Rock Canyon, motorcyle rentals (really fun), and lots more.

Man I sound like a convention Bureau rep
