Wasserwacht Alzenau
68F / 20C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 14m 21s
Overall Rank = 81/243
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 16/39
Pre-race routine:

Picked up my race packet around 8am, then drove to Hoerstein to pick up my bike, drove over to Alzenau to just make it to the race meeting at 9am

Setting up at the lake was a little chaotic, they dont use racks but the regular wooden rails between parking lines, they are sturdy but very low, especially for my bike

All the equipment left behind at the start at the lake beach were transported over to T2, that worked great
Event warmup:

Stayed out of the water again...
Swim
  • 08m
  • 550 meters
  • 01m 27s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started pretty well and was quickly in the front pack
From then on there was little change in positions, the field was pretty thin, even though there were approx 100 starters per wave

The pace felt pretty fast and I was never able to settle down with stroke and breathing, did many 2 stroke breaths

on the way back after the turnaround I overestimated the slight right turn and ended up too far to the right, not sure if that had any significant time impact
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Transition 1
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

Coming out of the water I finally found my sister and dad, they took my cap and goggles
later at the bike my father wanted to help with the suit, had to send him away to avoid DQ due to external help...

Getting on bike was okay, decided to put shoes on in T1 because from rack to start bike it was mostly sandy
Bike
  • 39m
  • 22.4 kms
  • 34.46 km/hr
Comments:

was able to pass many slower riders from the earlier wave but was passed by many from my wave and towards the end also from the third wave

There was a little bit of rain about 10min in, but that was short and the sun came out soon after

Not sure if I could have pushed harder, but was definitely passed a lot, I felt slow, even though I avg 34.4 at the end of the bike

What would you do differently?:

I need to go back to intervals and tempo bikes next season!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

volunteers took your bike, then a short run to the shoes over grass and pavement, very nice T
Run
  • 23m 4s
  • 4.64 kms
  • 04m 58s  min/km
Comments:

Managed again tu run under 5:00 pace but was hoping for a faster run due to the short course
There was one gradual hill around 3.5k, not steep enough to be a real threat but long enough to hurt
What would you do differently?:

Don't get two blisters the day before!
