Overcast
Total Time = 3h 04m 26s
Overall Rank = 331/374
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 54/57
Pre-race routine:

Banana, yogurt, tea, coffee, trying to keep warm
Event warmup:

Not much. I did the Terry Fox walk a thon yesterday and my planar facitus was acting up.
Swim
  • 51m
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

Panicked again. What can I say. I was the absolute slowest swimmer at the entire event today a full minute slower than anyone else on the course. 3 swimmer from the AG that started 30 minutes after me passed me on their swim.
What would you do differently?:

Not panic? Seriously - not swim. I might switch to doing relay
Transition 1
  • 03m 41s
Comments:

I cramped up bad and had to lie down for a few seconds out of the water. The pain was excruciating. I grabbed a gel and plowed on through.
What would you do differently?:

Get shoes with velcro instead of laces and maybe some of those new fangled pedals with those cleat things.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 15s
  • 40 kms
  • 31.48 km/hr
Comments:

If the surface had been dry and a calm day this would have been lightning fast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. It was a good ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

THe laces on my cycling shoes knotted while I was trying to get them off!

The thing that is weird here is I know it took me over 2 minute to get out of the transition but the official time has me at 31 seconds.
Run
  • 57m 12s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 43s  min/km
Comments:

If you had asked me during the run what my pace was I would have said about 5:30 clearly I didn't have a good sense of what my real pace was.
What would you do differently?:

Train a little harder. I don't have any complaints about the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to my stuff and packed up

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming

Event comments:

I didn't participate in any of the post race stuff, but they had a big tent with food. It was a pretty bleak day and the rain started not long after I finished so I headed home straight away.

Panick attack about 200 meters in. My wife walked along shore to encourage me. I kept at it. Breast stroke, side stroke, floating on my back. Anything to keep my face out of the water. I don't know how much water I swallowed. It was about 800 meters before I calmed down. Then I got a wicked leg cramp around teh 1000 meter mark. Last one out of the water a full
Suit: Tri suit
Course: Straight out a short left turn, another left and back again. The wind kicked up a little the second half of the swim for me and I swallow quite a bit of water.

My time and the official time really differ here. I don't know what they were measuring or how. I have me coming off the bike in 1:09 and change That is a HUGE difference.
Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: The Gilles Villeneuve F1 circuit in Montreal. 9 laps. The course was wet and slippery with some pretty big puddles at some points but it was lightning fast on the back straight away because the same 30K wind that knocks you off your saddle through the turns is at your back down the straight. It was effortless to get up to 45 on the straights.

Congratulations Denis!!!!  Dont give up on the swimming, this is a common feeling amongst ALL triathletes. You will work thru it. challenge it, dare it and overcome it.

Are you using toe clips on your pedals? This is ok since it cuts down on transition time, although clipless pedals and bike shoes WILL help. If you are just using toe clips, you will benefit from 'speed laces' or 'quicklaces' . These allow you to just to slip your runners in and go. They will be tight enough for the bike and run.

Again, super job!!!!  Enjoy evening!

Do they hold open water swims in your area? You should see about getting more time in the water (not a pool). I found that I am less nervous/panicked when I exhale completely when my face is in the water.

Anyway...great job, don't be discouraged...it took most of us a while to feel comfortable.

Great Job Denis!!

You rock triathlete....super first race. Great way that you pulled it together and was able to complete the swim. Your wife was supportive that really helps. You were smoking on the bike....and it was wet so imagine if it was dry.

Now...maybe this off season you'll get to the pool more and next summer do some open water swims. I know you have fallen in love with running...and biking.....but you can do the full Tri not just a relay.

Maybe I'll come up next year and do the Oly or 1/2....need to get better/faster at everything first.

Congrats!!

Congratulations Denis!!!

I am still waiting for my results. They screwed up with my chip, so I don't have an official time as of now. On my watch, I finished in 2:53

Hold on, Denis, was that your first tri ever? I would never have had the nerve to do an Oly first time out.

I also found the mass start hard on Saturday and as a result breastroked most of the way, but I only did half of what you did. Good on ya!

Also, the timing seemed off to me too. I think they start the bike once you pass the marker for the end of the swim and start the run once you pass the marker for the end of the bike.

Congratulations D!! So what if you tweaked during the swim - you still got through it. Everything that we've learned about survival on dry land means squat in the water. Sometimes it takes a lot of re-programming to get it right. It looks like you hammered the rest of the course though - way to go!

Congratulations Denis.  It's a bummer about the swim but you still finished and you even beat my 1000 Island oly time by 7 minutes!
