I did just about 14 yesterday afternoon when it was in the low 80's. I expected my HR to be higher than normal, but it wasn't. Hopefully that means my training will prepare me well if April 16th turns out to be warmer than hoped!

Taper time is nearly here too!

Yep, had my first Boston marathon dream last night. That means it's almost race time!

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to head out for 21 on the course this morning and was thinking about race day breakfast.  This will be my first marathon (charity #) and it seems many of you are seasoned vets - so I was looking for a little advice.  I've been planning to eat a sweet potato w/ some granola and honey for my breakfast ~ 2-3 hrs prior as the literature says - but with such a late start, I was wondering if I almost need to do 2 smaller breakfasts?  One would be when I first get up - maybe around 5ish (sweet potato I'm thinking) and then do a bagel around 8:15? (I don't start until 10:40+)

While I'm at it - might as well talk about actual race nutrition - I'm planning a gel or honey stinger chews at mile 7, 14, & 21.  This is about what I've been doing in training and seems to work well.  Also, I'm looking at ~ 16-20 oz of water/gatorade/hr.  What do all of you do?

Thanks for any advice!!

I'm in wave 1, but I'll still eat something when I get up (probably some cheerios as is my routine), and then have a bagel and a banana at the tent in athletes village about an hour before my start. It all depends on what you are used to.  I routinely eat a bowl of cereal or banana or something else fairly small and then start running 10 minutes later (when I'm doing long runs), and it doesn't bother me, but some people don't like to have much of anything for the last few hours before the start.

During the race, I'll take in about 200 calories per hour, as I've found that it works for me. This will be via some gatorade (combined with water) every few miles, plus a gel (Gu is my preferred gel) about three times during the race. I'm looking to go somewhere near three hours, so that means a gel around mile 8, 14, and 20 or so for me.

If what you've been doing works well for you, then stay with it.

elliot85 - 2012-04-02 1:11 PM TWO WEEKS!

Giddyup!

I'm feeling pretty pumped after yesterday's last long run (17), as I was easily holding my goal marathon pace for the last six miles.

Last real strenuous workout before Boston today, 3x 1 mile at Vo2Max. Miles were 5:37, 5:38, 5:28. It felt like I was coasting right along. The last mile was actually my fastest ever mile. I'm hoping that this is a good sign that my fitness is peaking at just the right time!

Quit yo braggin  I had my last speed day yesterday.

I've been checking the forecast several times daily. I swear the weather significantly changes every time I check.

I am not really tapering for the race.  Boston will be my last long training run before Ironman TX.  As this is my first time racing Boston, I am just in for the experience.  Can't wait!!!!

Same workout for me today per Pfitz (3 x 1 mile intervals). I hit 5:55, 5:44, and 5:42. Not bad considering I had just rolled out of bed. I'm starting to think I can go for a sub-7 minute pace on race day.

I'm  tempted to run a local 5k on Saturday to make use of my improved speed, cause I think I could handily beat my previous 5k best of 18:25, but I think I'll stick to the plan and run six easy.

That's one heck of a long training run . You'll have a great time in Boston, no doubt.

Bought a new suitcase, ready to travel on Friday!!!

Got in my last longish run a week out - 12 miles. Legs are feeling great, but the forecast isn't look promising temperature wise. Hopefully there will at least be a tail wind if it's on the warm side. I could do 60's, but anything warmer could be detrimental across the board for everyone.

Well, it looks like the weather is trending back toward really hot conditions. I guess it's time to shift the mindset from destroying my PR to keeping a good attitude and making the most of day Cool.

Gotta love New England...snow storms on April Fools day and summer on Patriots Day..I guess the only comfort is knowing everybody out there on Monday is facing the same conditions whatever they may turn out to be!!!

My husband is running on Monday - already has flight booked and plans to be smart about the race.  He has a hotel booked near the airport, but is hoping to find something close to the finish line.  If you know someone who is planning to skip the race but has a hotel for Sunday and Monday nights, let me know via email:

[email protected]

Thanks!  And good luck to all of you planning to run!

It was a tough call for me, as it was pretty tempting to take the automatic bid for 2013 and spend Monday at FenwaySmile, but I've decided to go for it, give it what I can, and be satisfied with the result even if it's nowhere near the outcome I had trained and hoped for.

Good luck everyone, and stay safe tomorrow.

It'll be one for the record books, and probably not time wise. I'm curious to see how much slower the elite field will be. I'm still holding out hope of qualifying for next year, as this is my only planned marathon this year.

Good luck to everyone!!
