Subject: Winter Bike Gear?

I live in Galesburg.  I started riding my bike, to train for my first (sprint) tri in June, '10, last year.  I haven't been riding in the winter, both because the winters lately have been plenty snowy and icy, but also because I don't have any cold weather riding gear.  I want to ride outside this fall/winter/spring as much as I can.

What gear do I need for cold weather?

Buscha, it is great to see someone on here from Knox County!   I grew up in Oneida!  Great questions about winter biking.  I am just finishing my first year of sprints and have made some improvement and do not want to lose it over the winter.  My dad lives in Galesburg and I go back and visit often and would love to do a sprint in that area if there is one.  Please let me know of something in the area if you find something, thanks.

Buscha

Do you have any tris coming up?  Are you from Galesburg originally?  I hope you do not consider this prying.

HI,

I bike with snow tires that have metal studs. I commute in the city year round on my cross bike. Most of my gear is ski stuff from marshals or t.j. max. check out REI clarence.

When I road bike in the winter I wear winter tights and a riding jacket. I dress in Layers and have a emergancy (pick me up) plan in place.

I have both riding boots and shoe covers.

Maybe it's just me, but no gloves I tried kept my hands from being painfully cold so I got these http://barmitts.com/.  Sure, it looks goofy but it works!

I'm with Belisze.  Got metal studs as I fell on some ice a few years back and broke my elbow.  Dress in layers.  I ride out in crystal lake.  I have a hybrid with fenders.  I have rode in up to 10 inches of snow and -10 deg F  You have to stay dry and keep the wind off of you.

When I lived in Galesburg, I tried outdoor training in the winter and it was very difficult.  Horrible plowing and the country roads were pretty bad.  I just spent my winter on the trainer doing spinerval videos and watching tv.  It prepped me easily for march when I hit the road.

The December issue of Bicycling magazine has a nice article on layering for cold weather rides.  I hope this helps.
