Yikes that looked a little close at 13 seconds. Busy lanes. Yep flips it is.So now we can move forward with finding lance perhaps with aero bars on a road bike and we'll have two down.

Are you SURE you want to completely emulate Lance in that way?

So, after you're done with surgery and chemo, how good is your bike going to be?

too bad his form still sucks

I bet he could get his repeat splits under 1:00 if he did something useful with his left arm and actually rotated.

Hahahaha

That's a Kestrel KM40, I believe, which was produced as a TT bike.

But it still doesn't answer the Campy/Shimano or clincher/tubular debate.

Anyone else swim clockwise circles (i.e., on the left)??  Or is he training in Oz?

I believe that video is from the Talisman Centre in Calgary, AB.  There are a few facilities here that have that rotation.  Our YMCA's though have the normal 'on the right' rotation though.

Really?  You go counter clockwise in all lanes?  We always alternate so that you aren't swimming *against* the lane beside you - handy in Fly sets to avoid arm smashing...

Is that really Lance, because the short amount I just saw looked like a really crappy swimmer, arms smacking the water, didn't look smooth or comfortable at all.

Every organized workout I've ever been around goes counter clockwise in all lanes, but that's a good idea to alternate lanes.  I've smacked hands hard enough a few times that I thought I broke a bone.  Alternating lanes would screw me up a bit, though, because I've done so many flip turns while circle swimming counter clockwise that I don't know if I could do a turn rolling to the right instead of the left anymore.

16 seconds for that final 25m.  Reports from that swim in Calgary say he was doing 1:01 for 100m in a set.  As crappy as it looks, it clearly works.

I don't roll different ways for different directions - one way just works a bit better than the other.  I swim with a gal that can roll either direction though - screws with my head when she is the one directly in front of me and I see her turn.

I'm really surprised it's not a common practice to alternate.  At our masters practices, the first person in the water pretty much determines the direction for everyone else.  If they swim counter clockwise, the lanes beside them go clockwise and so on...

ETA: they are alternating lanes in the video.  Maybe it's a Canadian thing...

Granted I'm not in the pool as much as I should be, but I've never seen anyone swimming clockwise in a pool before.  I like the idea of alternating lanes though, I've smacked hands badly on more than one occasion.

in college i swam with a hard cast on my hand and wrist, for half a season.  the whole team got a lot better at recovering with our hands in tight to our bodies.

He's clearly one of the fast swimmers since he wore a dark swim cap.

Holy near-collision.  How come they don't have lane dividers?

I clocked it at 15 seconds.  I wasn't impressed with the technique, either, but there is no doubt he was moving at a pretty darn quick clip.

I am interested to see how fast he really is in the water this weekend. I live less than an hour away from this Xterra race and hopefully get to see it for myself.

It's funny, I don't see that as a near collision at all.  As long as the person doing the flip turn comes off the wall at a predictable angle, the following person can start cutting into the center of the lane and go right past the flipper.  I used to train with 5-6 swimmers per lane in a 20 yard pool, you get pretty good at tight turns like that.

Okay, so I guess half of my earlier response was in sarc font and not everyone knew he was skimming 1:00/100m for his fast repeats.
