Subject: Jury Duty the same week as Beach 2 Battleship

My wife was notified today that she has jury duty October 25 thru October 29 which is the same week as B2B.  In order for us to get to the venue I must leave October 27 to drive to Willimington for B2B.  I need some suggestions before I call the court house Monday.

I found this website January of 2011 and decided to do the half at 55. Prior to taking on the half I had done two sprints and consistent swimming over the years. I have read this site several times a day for ten months.  My background is as a swimmer so I keep my logs on the USMS website.  Training for the half started January 1, 2011.   I have logged 353 hours of training which equates to 2130 miles on the bike (major improvement), 532 miles of walk run (bad knees), and 99 miles of swimming (strong swimmer) thru the end of August.  September should be about 60 hours of training. I really hate to miss B2B as all of my training would be for nothing.  At this point I feel ready to go as I have done all combinations of each leg of the race at the full distance or beyond.

Thank you BT for all of the great articles and posts that I have read.  This website made my midlife crisis easy. I have a plan to complete the race thanks to BT. The civility of this website as compared to some other sites has been great.  I hope that everyone has enjoyed their race season as much as I have enjoyed my training this year for the half.  Please provide me with suggestions so I do not have be a no show.

If you have a trip planned and $$ invested usually they let you off or they can reschedule her for another week.
A few months ago I had to go and they let me off the jury selection as I was going on a weekend trip and wasn't going to be back for the monday start time....
Call them...

good luck on your race!! You'll be awesome!

Around here there is a website you can move it to another date.

Also, a statistic I heard, and was probably made up, was that only about 10% of those things actually get a response.... take that information how you will.

I moved mine last time, totally forgot by the time the date came around, and never heard about it again.

I assume since she has the letter she will have to participate.  We live in a relatively small town so the jury pool can not be that large.

Last year I was selected for a date during which I would be on vacation. I called them and was able to postpone no problem. (And yes, I live in a tiny town with a small jury pool as well - it was still not an issue.)

The jury selection card should have instructions on who to call to do this.

Here they will usually let you re-schedule for a planned trip. I think the key is in letting them know that you're willing to re-schedule, that way it doesn't look like you're trying to dodge the duty. Good luck!

Generally there are 2 ways to handle situations like this: call the jury coordinator before your scheduled show up time and get it continued or, if you can't call, show up the first day of duty and advise the coordinator then and get it rescheduled.  There should be no problem.  Good luck.

Great ya'll have made me feel better.  I missed my swim today and cut my walk run short thinking about this problem.

Now back to our regularly scheduled workout.  Monday 10 mile drive to the court house followed by 40 miles on the bike, 3000 meter swim, and a 7 mile walk run.Smile

I'm sure everywhere is different, but in Omaha you just call in on Monday the week your selected and I've had "jury duty" 4 times in the last 10 years, but I've never had to go in because there were no active cases happening that week.

But, I would call as the others have suggested to see if you can move the date.

That's because the criminals all have that midwest guilt syndrome and they turn themselves in.

Great news.  I got concerned over nothing.  I called the court house this morning.  I was told to bring proof of B2B entry along with my hotel confirmation down to the judge's office.  I got the appropriate documents for the judge.  She reviewed them and said my wife was excused from jury duty and for me to have a good race.

Thanks everyone for all the comments I was really concerned this weekend.  Just five weeks to go!!!
