Subject: Need a new bike rack (car)...suggestions needed

Ok, my craptastic weekend ended with the need and decision to buy a new car and not fix my Explorer (its worth about the same as the cost to repair). I am sticking with a SUV because I have a bike and a lot of crap associated with this sport and am not looking at cars. I really like the idea of the Elements, very tri friendly, stand my bike up in the back, wash it out, etc. However, they are extrememly ugly (but growing on me--so ugly they're cute) and have gotten some laughs and criticism for thinking about one of these (shut up Welshy). They also have standard mp3 hookups for my iPod!!! I am also considering a Jeep Liberty, they're cute but smaller (so not too sure about this) and I would need a bike rack on the outside. Also considering a Honda Pilot, a nicer SUV, bigger, more conventional, but worse gas mileage than the Element, but nice !! The CRV's are smaller than what I would like too. Maybe a Toyota Highlander?? I know the Xterras are popular, but I don't really like them, and I like the Elements more. I have a friend that has one and he hates the mileage and he doesn't recommend it for me. Oh, yes, I need to stay under $25k, I know these can go for more than that, but I have a hookup for getting them wholesale, way below dealer prices.

I don't know too much about the Liberty, but have been leaning toward Honda for over a year because of the dependability (single girl here!). Any other suggestions would be appreciated along with comments and reviews on these vehicles. I know there was a thread about this not too long ago, but I don't have time to search and play around here today (gotta get a loan tomorrow, actually work, and test drive cars today so I can hopefully have one by Friday).

Thanks guys!

I personally like the Nissan Xterra. I believe it was voted as best SUV based on the price and what you get for that price. And it still looks like a SUV as opposed to your other choices.

Mini Cooper.  With back seats down, it actually holds a lot of gear, but I have to take both wheels off to get the bike in.  There is the cool factor which would be good for you.  33 mpg average, 0-60 in 7 sec for the S.  Cool, quick, and economical.  That's a hard combination to match.

Yeah-Comet gets a new bike rack!!!I say go with the Honda jsut because I'm baised. I'm a Honda girl and have been driving a Honda since I was 16. I love my CRV- it's perfect! Not too big, not too small and not a gas hog! I woudln't worry about what other people say about the Element- as long as you like it that's all that matters!

I just don't like them. Too many others that I like more.

I also thought about Xterra's, but they don't get great gas milleage.  Comet if you test drive a bunch of them, that will help you to limit them down.  Some cars look great, but don't feel right when you drie them!

OMG, I'll vote for ANYTHING but the Honda Element. Why would anyone want to drive around in something that looks like a cross between a UPS truck and an armored car?

Might as well go back to the old AMC Pacer....an aquarium on wheels!

OK...1) since you've got the hookup; and 2) since they are so ugly they're cool (and I don't even think they're that ugly...and also becuase I'm a function over form guy) I'd definitely definitely go with the Element.

Thanks Jim! Loved the yellow shorts-turned-speedo you wore at the race on Sat...

My cousin drives one of these in Iraq-maybe this would be good. It would definately scare some people at the next race.

You can't go wrong with a Honda.  I like the Element.  Not super cushy or anything but VERY functional.  I have seen several at tri's.  Plenty of space for two of everything.

I recently got a Ford Freestyle and really like it.  Roof Rack by Yakima.  Built on the Volvo XC90 chasis.  X-over vehicle category (station wagon).  Check it out.

Mini Cooper. I know, I know, you want an SUV, but that's just because you haven't driven the mini. Throw a bike rack on top, and you're the coolest tri chick ever.

Mini!

Comet, I vote for XTerra, I don't care if you don't like it.  Next to a chick driving a Jeep Wrangler with the top down and a bike on the back, I think that a chick driving an xterra with a bike on the back is the hottest thing.  those are my 2 cents, and around here, my two cents are worth about the same as everyone else's 2 dollars.

Like I said, who cares what everyone else thinks?  I saw an Element parked outside my bike shop one day, and it had some cycling stickers on the back window.  I was immediately jealous because it's a very practical vehicle for cyling, tri's and all that good stuff.  Wish I would have gotten one!  There's not a lot of them on the roads, so you would be unique

Actually looked at Jeeps about a month ago. The problem is I really like the ones with big tires, all macho--but they get about 11mpg and aren't fun on the highway driving to far away races. Axed.

The Elements are still on the top of my list. I love that they are different and keeping my bike inside.

I'll be the first (but not the last, no doubt) to say that Haley doesn't need any car to be the hottest thing...

AWwwwww....thanks Jim! Put a smile on my face, something I need right now.

Starting to feel a little less overwhelmed and a little more excited about a new bike rack. I have a plan for the next couple days hopefully, I can execute by Thursday.

Whatever I decide on, I'll post pictures of me next to it with Big Red (when I pick her up from the shop, poor girl  )

It depends on what kind of car I get, but probably not. If I go with the Element I'd like Black if I can. If I go with anything else, probably a silver or metallic color that hides dirt.

Big Red might get painted when I move (Runnergirl painted hers and its awesome, so now I want to), so she probably won't stay the same--no point in trying to match.

Sadly, it does not. My Honda civic is still running and paid for, so I can't justify the mini. But, I really really really want to.
