Subject: Please help aid my caffeine addiction...

Dear COJ,

I have recently relocated to the pacific NW, particularly in the Seattle/Tacoma area.  I initially noticed that there are coffee "shacks" (for the lack of a better term) almost everywhere.  I have found that I really like these places!  I have also discovered that there is a different type of coffee out there - white coffee.  After doing some searching on my favorite search engine [::cough, cough:: google rocks! bing blows!! ::cough, cough::] I have found out a little information about white coffee.  It is a coffee bean that is baked, rather than roasted which creates a much different flavor and a much lighter color of bean.  However, I am having a VERY hard time finding white coffee for sale.  I discovered one supplier/site that has it as a ground espresso roast and it's not completely unreasonable in the scope of price.  It's about $13 for 1 pound; however shipping on 1 lb. of coffee is over $10!!  Why exactly is shipping for a small-ish package that weighs 1 pound $10?!?!

After doing another search, I find that a first-class stamp can ship up to 13 oz.  And because I don't remember a lot of conversions [although the equation to calculate hp is (torque x rpm)/5252] , I also find that 1 lb. = 16 oz.  So basically, 2 stamps (at 44 cents each) would ship over 1 lb and would cost less than one dollar.

I also realize, if you want to get into more details, that spending $23 for a pound of coffee will still cost less than my $2.20 + tip lattes and americanos if you figure out how much it would cost per beverage...I also realize that the pygmies are starving in New Guinea and I am not starving.  In the least.  Nor am I without access to less expensive caffeine.  I also realize that I have the "luxury" of having access to caffeine.  (You're never more than a 1/2 mile away from a coffee stand/shop in this area.)  But I guess my point is that it still seems ridiculous to charge $10 to ship 1 pound of coffee...making the reasonable cost of a pound of coffee seem less reasonable.

Also...I'm guessing you are probably not paying attention to this long-"winded"  (is it winded when it's typed?!?!) letter that addresses my concerns.  Booger butt cakes.  However, I feel that I have the right to address my issue in the appropriate forum.  And what more of an appropriate forum than this one??

Thanks,

LKCT

P.S. If you know of a place to purchase ground white coffee - I'd much appreciate the info.  OR of a place where you can get reasonable "green" coffee beans and instructions how to bake at home.

P.P.S.  I'm seriously still typing?

P.P.P.S. Is having 3 P's prior to the S like making 3 lefts to make a right?...and therefore actually a script made prior to the note?

Haha dang someone is a fan!

Apparently the Northwest extends to Alaska, because we have a million of those coffee shacks in town here! This is my first time hearing of white coffee, sounds interesting enough.

As per your questions, I don't think that using stamps to ship commercial food goods is legal, and that is a shame!

I'd say suck it up once, order the coffee and see for yourself if it is worth it. Surely you will find a better source of white coffee eventually!

You should talk to Marma as he roasts his own coffee so should be help to help you with a supplier for green beans.

Beyond that, if you really like quality coffee, I would never purchase ground coffee, especially for espresso. It needs to be ground within minutes of being extracted or you might as well be at *$'s.

Good luck,

Shane

You obviously had way too much coffee as you started on your google venture searching for white coffee.   Is it not racist to call it white coffee?  shouldn't it be called "baked" coffee if THAT is how the beans are prepared to make it white?
Sorry... southern girl having her coffee... that's all

Regular stamps can send up to a 13 oz FLAT ENVELOPE.  Not a box.  It's more because of the volume of space it takes up...

If you like the stuff buy it.  OR...perhaps ask one of your favorite coffee shacks if they would sell you some of the beans.  They probably would.

This is a good point; there is probably a local roaster who preparing the white coffee so even if you can't find a coffee shop to sell you whole beans, you may be able to purchase directly from the roaster.

Originally white coffee is from Yemen, south Saudi Arabian Coast. Its poors mans coffee. What they do is they take the shell of the bean and then boil it. I doubt the difference is roasting vs. baking, as you can roast beans in an oven.  My guess is that it is a function of the roast/bake time being short, giving the beans a very light roast and leaving much of the bean flavor (vs. the roast flavor darker beans can take on).

Regarding shipping, we can ship up to 5 lbs for roughly $6 within western Washington.  The USPS API isn't very user friendly and doesn't allow estimates for all of the shipping methods available (we only have the option for the Priority service level on our site).   This may be the issue with the site you're using as well.

WELL!!  I solved my "problem"...no not my caffeine problem.  I think that is here to stay!

I took someone's suggestion and asked my fav coffee shack if they sell it.  "No" the bearista said (its called the Coffee Bear), "but we buy everything from Dillanos.  You could ask them!"

I said "ok!"..quick google search...Dillanos' HQ is about..10 miles maybe from my house ::sheepish grin::  Called them up - do you sell products for personal use?  Sure - you can pick it up during our regular business hours.  I happen to be driving (almost) right by there...in about an hour :-)  2 lbs of white coffee for $20!!  NO shipping costs!  And I have to say the inside of their office was very trendy, looked fun - almost!!

Open the container, first sniff...it smells like peanut butter!!  (Seriously)  Hubby concludes (who doesn't even like the SMELL of coffee) that it smells like peanut butter and graham crackers...!

white coffee

Hubby tasted it and he said it doesn't have a coffee taste at all!  I haven't quite figured out the best concoction yet...but I will!  I also will have to remember not to have it past 1 or 2 in the afternoon....!!!

They aren't beans - its pre-ground.  (I read online that some say the white coffee is hard on a personal grinder...)  but the container that says "Great White" is the actual coffee - so they are...blonde?!?!

And of course you are more than welcome to stop by and try some!!
