Swim
Comments: The down-river swim was awesome. Got into a little bit of seaweed which was kinda freaky the first time to get in it. Felt calm and relaxed the entire swim (even after getting kicked hard in the face). Navigation was ok. I was expecting a squigly man for the finish but there was none, so I had a hard time knowing when to curve back toward the shore as I was trying to stay closer to the middle to take advantage of the current. Happy with my swim. Transition 1
Comments: Uneventful. wetsuit strippers were nice. Lost my googles. Bike
Comments: Took two pedal strokes and chain popped off. Great. Got back on in no time but the thought of things going bad made me wonder when I would get a flat. Started out maybe a little to fast but felt comfortable. Temps were decent and cloud cover was nice. Pretty uneventful ride and was happy with my race...so far. What would you do differently?: Maybe back off a slight bit to save for the run. Transition 2
Comments: Uneventful. Run
Comments: With about 3 miles to go on the bike, the skys parted and the sun came out in its full glory...and boy did it got hot and crazy humid. I felt surprising good the first couple of miles and my splits were too fast, even with walking the water stations. First 6 miles were OK and I was right on 8:00/m pace that I was hoping for. Unfortunetly, the heat/humidity turned this into a death march. Wheels fell off at mile 8. Started getting a little nervous as I was getting chills/goosebumps so I knew I had to be careful. Took extra long walk breaks at the water stations to get extra water/ice. At one point I thought I was going to have to walk the last couple of miles but I kept going. The number of walkers was crazy and dishearting. Seeing the finish line was heavenly. Had a hard time staying upright after I crossed but had lots of help to keep you moving. Totally disappointed in my run but still came in with a 15min PR thanks to a good bike and run. What would you do differently?: Find a race in Maine! Honestly, I don't know what I could have done differently. The heat/humidity is a great equalizer and it kicked my ass. Post race
Warm down: Found the closest spot I could find to sit and recover. Sat next to a guy who starting getting chills and that reminded me that I need to get the heck into the shade. Grabbed some food and beer and bitched about the heat with everyone else. Got a massage which was a godsent. Got my bag so I could track my wife online. Plan was to go to mellow mushroom and drink some beers but was shocked to see her kicking some butt and looked to be finishing a good hour better than I expected so I headed out on the course to cheer her on. Overall was happy with the race even though the run was brutal. Raced smart. Had no real issues. Had a fun time. Wife had a great race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heat. We got to packet pickup around 2pm. Took a nice 2m jog with the wife to shake out the legs after the drive. Dropped off bikes and headed to the hotel. Dinner at Macaroni Grill and the back to watch some football. Slept terrible. Even tried a tylenol PM which didn't really help. Up bright and early and got some McD's coffee immediately. Oatmeal, Banana, OJ and some PB english muffin.
Got to transition to get everything set up. Turn on Garmin...dead. I charged it the day before so it must have somehow turned on in my bag. Great...I have no other cycle computer on my bike. Go tell my wife and she offers me her garmin since she has a backup bike computer. Hooray.
Grabbed our wetsuit and stuff and headed to the bus.
As we get to the bus, the line is huge and worker tells us it is quicker to walk the 1.2 miles. So that was my warm up.
