I just received an email from Road Runner Sports that they're opening a retail location in Atlanta. According to the email, it's due to open in November.

It seems that Atlanta has a lot of running store options already and I wonder why Atlanta was chosen by RRS given that they're a west coast retailer and a huge online retailer.

Given the amount of items available on their online site, I wonder if the store is going to be more like a running warehouse vs. a local running shop.

Anyone have any more details on the store? Or want to weigh in on your thoughts of how a shop like that will impact the local running stores already here?

The store is already open on roswell rd just north of piedmont. Looks like a nice setup but reminds me of a performance bike shop. They have 5 or so treadmills to help you pick out what type of shoe fits you. I liked it because they seem like they have good prices on their own brand but also carry bigger brands like Nike.

It's a relatively small store and alot of the staff didn't seem like they were big runners but I could be wrong. I could see it impacting local shops based on their cost for clothing and other gear but the shoe prices aren't that different. They do have a VIP club that cost $2 to join and you get 10% of your purchase every time.

That is the first thing I thought of as well when I read this. There went the last incentive I had to maintain my VIP club membership. Ever since Fleet Feet and Big Peach opened up within walking/Running distance from the house (Decatur) I haven't shopped at Road Runner anyway. Just called to cancel the auto-renew on my membership; funny you cannot do it on line...

They're not gonna give up the $$$ that easily. Better than LA Fitness, you have to mail in your cancellation notice that you have to go to the gym to get printed out by them.

Where you at in west GA? Might need a riding/running motivator this winter and the W[s]BL is always looking for fresh meat...

Apparently, they are going to loose their ability to sell(shoes) online at the deeply discounted rates in the next year or so- I think 2013?  All the shoe manufacturers are going to make them follow the same rules on discounting that other retailers have to follow. I can't remember the speciffic details- but several of the shoe reps have talked about it recently.

This could be part of the reason for them to push the brick & mortar locations...just a thought.
