One last question:

Can you take a bike/trainer on the ship?

When you join the Navy, the last thing you will have to worry about is space and privacy. You will be in a state room since you are an officer... but all that means is that you will only have 1 or two "room mates" but you will be living in a hall closet. Not much room for bike/trainer. If you go carrier, they have pretty nice gyms... these days they probably have spin bikes, you can run around the hanger bay, but that's about it.

I understand. I saw a recruitment video, and at 4:45 this officer (NUPOC) takes his trainer and bike out. I was wondering if this was just made up for recruitment, or actually takes place.

I was a SWO(N) in the mid-90s. Although nuke or other technical fields are logical choices for a post-Navy civilian career, I found it to be an outstanding general leadership experience, as well. I'm in a completely different profession at this point, but I draw on lessons learned as a watch officer and division officer all the time.

I came to nuke school from a different path, but I was always very impressed with those who came through the NUPOC program. Personally, I found NNPS and especially Prototype to be very intense, but not competitive in a negative way- there was a great spirit of collaboration as students helped each other get through the programs. It's not the easiest option to choose, but it's rewarding.

Feel free to pm if I can be helpful with any specifics, with the caveat that I've been out since 99.

I don't want to say I know for a fact... there is always some wiggle room, but it is pretty restricted what you can bring on board. My friends and I had our own weight set in a shop. Obviously if there is room in a shop or store room, but it just depends... long time ago I knew a friend who's brother was a serious BMX stunt rider... he had his bike on board and would practice and had photos and he was on a small ship.... so it just depends... but in general... ya I would bet money the shot was staged and not truly representative.

one of my best friends from high school went through nuke school and served active duty on a sub for 6 years.

he was a good soldier and good at his job but hated being in the navy.  <<<< it is a lifestyle that is not for all (i was army similarly i was a good soldier and good at my job -medic - but army life was not for me)

he now has a good paying civilian job in nukes -he is not in love with nukes, but it is hard to pass up a good job

Almost any ship will let you bring your bike if you can find the space for it.  We had an Officer on my last ship that would set up his bike to spin while on watch in CCS (where they stand the propulsion plant watches on an Arleigh Burke Destroyer).  All based on space available.

Can't add anything.  Just wanted to say that I was supposed to go into the Navy Nuke program after high school.  My dad (career enlisted), as well as my mom and girlfriend at the time, all said go to college and then go officer.  Unfortunatly, I graduted college at the high of Clinton military cutbacks.

While I don't regret going to college (where I met my better half), I do still think about my choice of not enlisting.

Having said that, my choice gets easier every year I get older.  Earlier this year I was able to visit USS Hulsey (destroyer) and USS Carl Vinson (carrier).  After seeing the conditions that the guys live in, I can only say that life at sea seems like a young man's game.
