Had a great race! Was so worried about the water temp (67 degrees) but the outside cold air (55 degrees) made the water seem warmer. Good swim and the water was salty but I was fine with it. Reminds me of the ocean....well maybe over salty water. The rim of the lake was real dirty and oily but not to bad. Surprised that a foot in front of you standing on the edge of the water you can see bottom. Not green pea soup like TTL. The bike course was nice. I actually liked the turns. First loop was just a feel for the course and then after I was comfortable with the turns I was fine. The run was great. Dirt and asafalt terrain. Easy on the joints. Nothing senic about the course but nice and flat (a +++). The volunteers were awesome guiding everyone through the course. They were a must to keep you confident knowing you were on course. Would I do this course again? Maybe....but my only complaint is that the Olympic distance participates didn't get a metal. Sure everyone got the sprint distance metals but for the 40 something participates that went long didn't get the olympic distance metal. I gave my sprint distance metal away to a youngster. I didn't do a sprint...I did the Olympic : ( . I do love the tech shirts and the variety of bagels and oranges were good. But, that was the only refuel food that there was after finishing. The packets were nice with samples and a bounus shoe pouch.

SunshineEstrella,It is good to read your Firebird Lake experience was much better than that you had at Bartlett Lake a few weeks ago! It sounds as though you did well...KUDOS to you!! I find it interesting that I read your posts and those of other locals, see who is going to the three triathlons in which I have participated, and yet have no idea who the people are. Just my big thought for the day...and it hurt!

Thanks and no problem. Both my friends beat me though by a large margin... ARGH! Haha. More motivation! Hope you did well too

Will you be doing the Anthem Sprint? Maybe see you there~

Amica was my third triathlon. I did my first five weeks ago. Before that, it spent most of my 53 years fairly inactive. Finishing was good. . I was last in my age group, but my speeds were the same or faster than my first Tri (the second was Bartlett Lake which was in a class of its own). I had fun and have loads of time to improve over the winter. Winter training = smoking your friends in the Spring! I don't think I am going to do the Anthem Tri because I prefer open water swims. I think my next event might be the Desert Classic duathlon (road version) in March. It will force me to work on running skills which are horrible.

Congrats on getting faster and making the decision to stay active! Just keep working at it and pretty soon you'll be up there with the cream of the crop

Yeah, Anthem will be a different experience. I haven't done a pool start before. It kind of makes me more nervous for this one rather than the two OWSs'!? Haha. But 3 in 5 weeks is a lot! Well, good luck on the training in the winter and maybe I'll see you in the spring. Lake Havasu will be my next race after Anthem. Bringing the 'A+' game there! :P

Again, thumbs up to you!

Based on what I've heard and read, did most of you fell like this coming out of the water?

Hahaha. I actually didn't notice until AFTER the race. I was rubbing my face and all this brown web-like stuff was coming off. Kept scrubbing and found that it was everywhere! Clumps of brown jelly. Used the remainder of my water bottle to at least wash my face. Blech!

I'll participate in AMICA again. IF it's at another venue.

I noticed the high mineral content, but not any of the gas or oil smells or residue cited by others. Given my slow swimming, I spent more time in the water than most. I would race again at Firebird Lake.
