Subject: Cyclocross Bikes?

Now that Tri season is over, I'm interested in the possibility of Cyclocross.

Any recommendations on a relatively inexpensive cyclocross bike?  I don't mind used in the right price range ($800-$1200), but very little out there.  I'm scanning e-bay, but no idea what to look.  I'm not against buying a decent frame and building it up for the same price range.

I would like to use the bike as a cyclocross bike and possibly commute some on it.

Any recs on bikes to look for, frames that might be decent, what to look for in general.

Thank you!!!

I bought a Fuji based strictly on price from my LBS, I needed it for an adventure race in August that had some on and off road riding. Not technical off road just on some dirt roads cover with crushed limestone. I think the bike works well for what what I needed and they had a decent price it too. I bought the 2.0 version.

This falls in the tank category but spec'd with 105 if a great deal. Nashbar probably has numerous other coupon codes floating around to make this even cheaper.

Cheapest frame out there is the Nashbar cross frame, I think it's going for 99 - 129.  I raced one my first cross season, solid frame, a bit heavy buy I know a few people using them and they race just fine without having to put out a ton of money.  I paid 200 bucks for the complete bike, it had bar-end shifters, 8 speed campy on it.

There should be plenty of used cross bikes in that range, do you know if the local racing scene where you live has a google group or some other way that the local race folks communicate?  In this area there are cross bikes posted for sale just about every day.

For new bikes Specialized Crux is becoming popular, it's a good price and I believe comes with an Apex group for the base model.  LOL though at Cross races you see quite a variety of bikes, especially at the Cat 4 level.

I'm in the same mindset - a little cross and commute. I found a used '06 Flyte. I have seen mixed reviews and I do not think they are made anymore, but I love mine. Mine had all ultegra componets. and was premounted for optional disk brakes. I have now done 3 cross races and love them. I have also only rode 3 time off road (I have a TT bike, not to offroad friendly) and regretablelly have taken a couple of spill and the bike has held up great.

Checkout Bikesdirect.com cross bikes.  The Fantom Cross with SRAM Rival at $999 is something I've been looking at.

Yes, I looked at the bikes direct, but have never bought from them.  The Fantom Cross looked like a good deal.  I don't know much about SRAM, are the rival parts good/comparable to Shimano 105 groupset?

Also, checked out Nashbar and the steel frame bike comes with 105 components.

http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_526536_-1_203040_10000_202339

or something like this?

Or, am I making the purchase of a possible cross bike way too complicated?

Yeah. I noticed that after I posted it. It was a sale a week or so ago.

Don't know if you've got a Redline dealer close by, but dollar for dollar, they're a great value too. The Felt F1X also is a good deal.

No local dealer, but did talk with a local bike shop that said a lot of folks buy a Ridley frame and have them built up.

Anything special about a Cyclocross wheel?  I've got two left over wheels (Bontranger Race Lite) from when I replaced my road bike wheels.

I bought my brother a mid-range hybrid bike from them several years back, he's had no issues.

Below is a list for Low-end to High-end for Shimano & Sram based on my research on-line and talking to my LBS, there's not a direct correlation between the two, more of an splitting of the ranges:

(SH) Tiagra

(Sram) Apex

(SH) 105

(Sram) Rival

(SH) Ultegra

(Sram) Force

(SH) DA

(Sram) Red

(SH) Di2

Nothing really special and those Bontragers will get you started if you go the frame build route. I prefer a 32 spoke, 3-cross wheel to the 18/24 spoke road wheels, but then again, I weigh 235 in season and am tough on wheels. Remember, you're going to be hitting it hard with these and they'll take a beating. If you want, race the ones you have this seaon and maybe another, then worry about wheels which are more durable.

If you're looking at that Salsa frame, that's a nice bike. But your LBS can get it or you can buy it from cyclocrossworld.com or from bikeman.com

I've got the felt f1x - great deal, great ride.

I won't rehash the frame and gruppo information, the above posters have covered it. I will strongly recommend, though, that you avoid cantilever brakes and opt for a model with disc brakes - brakes like the Avid BB5 or BB7. First - better stopping power, second - won't chatter (which is annoying as all get out if you're using it as a commuter). The only penalty is a little bit of weight, which on a cx bike, you won't notice.

Oh, and if you're going to use it as a commuter, make sure that your cx bike has all the braze on's to handle your panniers, fenders, racks, and any other gear you might want to add to the bike.

My 0.02. Hope this helps.

ETA: Get used to changing tires, or swapping wheels. CX bikes run deeply treaded tires on very low pressure. When you commute, you'll likely want slicks or light tread with some air pressure in them. I'm not sure I know anyone that does CX / commute that didn't end up (after they got sick of changing tires) with a couple sets of wheels.

I commuted ONCE on my race tubulars and picked up a shard of glass 500yards from work. A nice $70 mistake and lesson learned.

I now have matched Velocity tubulars and clinchers so I can swap wheels and not even worry about brake readjustments. Another advantage to having a huge parts box (sadly gained from numerous crashes) and the knowledge of how to build your own wheels.

I need to get me some studded snow tires. http://www.biketiresdirect.com/product/schwalbe-marathon-winter-stu...

That was my first cross bike and I still have it. It's got a loyal following and has a purpose, but that purpose isn't racing. Sure, people race them and do well. But it's a tank for weight and the tubing is springy and not compliant. It's painfully heavy on lap 6 on run-ups and barriers when you REALLY want an 18 pound bike and not a 25 pound one.

I have since set mine up for touring / commuting and it's great for that use. Mixture of Dura Ace and XT mountin bike drivetrain, Truvative road triple crank, Cane creek brakes and racks and fenders.

Get the Salsa bell lap handlebar if you do build a frame. It's really better for control than the standard road geometry bar.

Here ya go: A Ridley X-box for $900 Tough to beat. It is Tiagra, but on a cross bike, the componets are going to take a beating and need replacing anyway. You can buy 105 or Ultegra replacements as they wear out.

nobody's mentioned a specilized tricross yet.  great bikes.  I'm riding one now because I wasn't ready to commit to a true roadie when i started.  if I can convince my wife to let me upgrade it could be bought.

Don't have any insight on good frame, but Bonktown has a Fuji up right now with SRAM rival for $1,049.
