Subject: Knee pain after HIM..Marathon in 2 weeks
I recently completed my first HIM on Sept 10 and I'm running the Twin Cities Marathon on Oct 2. I think I ran a little too much the week after my HIM and started experiencing some significant knee pain. I took 4 days off to rest, but when I ran this morning my knees started hurting again. I know I screwed up by not letting my body rest properly after the HIM, but what do I do now with about 10 days until the marathon? I want to keep up my training finish in a good time in the marathon, but I also don't want to have to DNF in the marathon, due to knee pain.  Should I just stop running until the marathon and ice my knees every night? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Derek

This sounds familiar.  I trashed my knees at my HIM...but mine was in June and my mary isn't til the end of October.  I had the option of resting them.

Where is the knee pain?  That's a good start...help us narrow it down as to what is hurting....

What would be worse for you personally- perhaps doing real damage to your knee, DNF, or a slower time that you'd like?

If it's the slower time, then suck it up and run through pain. Not at all what I would do, but I've learned you can't tell someone else how to live or train!!

If you're ok with a slower time I'd really rest it - obviously you're in great shape and if you have a slow marathon, who cares? You did it, AND a frigging half IM, so you're still ahead of oh, about, 99.99% of the world right there!

Do nothing but rest.....seriously. It will let your body assimilate all that training that you did (HIM) for your marathon. Maybe do some pool running or elliptical trainerm, something low impact.

For starters, I haven't had any previous issues with knee pain and didn't have any pain during the HIM. I was an idiot and decided to run about 18 miles, 4 days after my HIM. Sorry, I flunked anatomy, but the pain is on the top of my patella, so it's on the bone and not the ligament.

Still recovering from a running injury from my half on 9/11. I would suggest ice and rest and perhaps reconsidering the marathon. Getting 100% healthy is your top priority. There will be other races.

Thanks for the advice. I'll lay off running for the next 7 days and then try a slow 3 miler and see how I feel. Thanks again,

You may be suffering form a mild chondromalacia patellae, in other words, runner's knee. That is an irritation of the undersurface of the kneecap that results in anterior knee pain. It is generally advised that rest be imposed until full recovery, although cross-training can be done to maintain fitness, such as the advice given above (swimming, for instance).

Nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory medication can be used to reduce pain. If the situation is recurring it may be due to a misalignment of thekneecap producing friction that leads to the inflamation.

My advice, rest plenty, swim, and get ready for the marathon, but after the marathon take enough time to fully recover. That can mean a month or so.

Bisucas,
Thanks for the info, good to know. Wish me luck in recovery, so I can at least finish the marathon.

I ran the New York Marathon in early November 2003, did not get the time I wanted, ran less than 20 miles over the next 30 days and ran my best marathon in 3-years in early November at another marathon -3:32. Take the two weeks off, rest your leg, ice, massage, etc. Running from now to race day is not worth it!

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I started the marathon and paced my wife for the first 3 miles, I started to feel a little pain and decided to walk. A couple of friends picked me up at mile 6 and I was able to cheer on my wife throughout the race. She finished in 3:47, so I was glad I was able to pace her for while. Thanks again and sitting out one marathon is better than having knee problems the rest of my life.

Congrats....you are a bigger person than me I have run two marathons in knee agony...just because I refused to sit them out.  And my knee pain has lasted two years and still going.

I applaud your ability to listen to your body.  Can you teach me?

Congrats to both of you. You're wife for finishing and in a good time. And, you for using your head. I am sure it was hard to quit but you did the right thing. I suggest you check out a condition called Patellar-Femoral Syndrome. It is a condition where the patella tracks differently than what it normally does. The abnormally tracking causes excess friction to occur between the patella and the femoral condyles. Strenghtening of muscles and improving lower extremity flexibilty are the best to improve the condition. A PT or ATC could also teach you some taping techniques to help relieve the discomfort.
