Total Time = 3h 09m 51s
Overall Rank = 7/40
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/8
Pre-race routine:

stay warm!
Event warmup:

primarily, sit in nice warm car...got out for about half a mile of jogging building to a couple of tempo surges 5min before start, then short stretching session and get to start line.
Run
  • 43m 24s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

comfy first run. 732 includes potty stop in the woods. cold weather racing...too much coffee..bad combo :-)

What would you do differently?:

train my run more. make one last portajohn stop.
Transition 1
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

a little fumbly strapping in while rolling...combo of gloved hands and interference from toewarmer straps...and super slow coasting casued by headwinds on the opening stretch.
What would you do differently?:

thicker sox and no toewarmers on shoes maybe?
Bike
  • 1h 41m 6s
  • 38.4 miles
  • 22.79 mile/hr
Comments:

that is a rocket-fast course under ideal conditions. the rollers are so short you can maintain momentum up over the next one in most cases without chainging gears. wind made life interesting on the northbound and westbound legs, but not terrible. #1 tip: practice with your deep section wheels on windy days...it's what I do.
What would you do differently?:

race with my powertap...had a goal power output that I think I hit based on RPE, but no data to prove it. OTOH, I might've unnecessarily limited myself if the goal output was softer than what I actually managed to do on raceday.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

T2 is so blessedly simple...dump a bunch of stuff, put on a tiny bit of stuff, go.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 43m 34s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

635-644-646 going into the turn, held it together (just) for another mile at 702 and then 727-723 for the closing pair as the wheels came off.
What would you do differently?:

I walked the last two aid stations. dumb...unnecessary...a couple sips of gatorade with 15min to go is like a bandaid on a compound fracture.

Post race
Warm down:

warming down? that's funny right there. all I could do to get into my car and change into warm stuff as fast as possible.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

need to run more in training.

Event comments:

on-time grade based on circumstances, not advertising. start delayed 2hrs in attempt to get temperatures to "sane", then another 5min or so at new start time as last-second decision to shorten swim (concurrent tri events) needed to be communicated to racers. RD did what he had to do and I begrudge him nothing.

epic day. worthy of Powerman name. I'll be back next year.
